Why did it have to be Liz Truss?

The Queen clung onto dear life just long enough to see Boris go. Once that was done, she could die in peace. Not that Truss will be much better, but I guess the Queen must have had some hope. Interesting coincidence that they were both named Elizabeth too.

Charles III to reign ‘more like a Scandinavian monarchy’

The reign of King Charles III will see Britain’s royalty become “more like a Scandinavian monarchy”, former prime minister Gordon Brown has predicted.

Mr Brown said he expected Charles to perform his duties in a more informal and “approachable” way than his mother Elizabeth II, with a slimmed-down royal family on display.

Like the UK, Sweden, Norway and Denmark are all constitutional monarchies, but their sovereigns have long adopted a less formal style than British queens and kings, with less emphasis on pageantry and ceremony and smaller royal families taking part in official duties.

Another former prime minister Theresa May agreed that the monarchy will evolve under Charles, but said she expected him to make any changes “gradually and very carefully”.

Speaking to Laura Kuenssberg on BBC1’s Sunday, Mr Brown pointed to the King’s decision to meet crowds outside Buckingham Palace to thank them for paying their respects to the Queen, receiving kisses on the cheek and hand from female well-wishers.

UK unemployment rate slumps to 48-year low but more Britons quit jobs market

Britain’s unemployment rate has hit its lowest level since 1974 but the number of workers dropping out of the jobs market also jumped higher, according to official figures.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the unemployment rate fell to 3.6% in the three months to July – the lowest rate since May to July in 1974.

Most economists had been expecting the unemployment rate to hold steady at 3.8%.



However, the figures showed that the so-called economic inactivity rate rose to 21.7% – its highest level for more than five years.

The ONS said those classed as economically inactive rose by 194,000 in the quarter to 9 million, due mostly to rising numbers of long-term sick as well as students, which has led to a shrinking labour market.

Zac Goldsmith loses environment job amid fears of animal welfare downgrade

The Conservative peer Zac Goldsmith has been sacked as an environment minister, raising fears among some Tory MPs and campaigners that animal welfare will be downgraded by Liz Truss’s government.

The environmentalist and politician, a close friend of Boris Johnson and his wife, Carrie, has been stripped of the domestic animal welfare brief and will no longer attend cabinet.

However, he is expected to keep his role at the Foreign Office, where he is minister of state for the Pacific and international environment. Downing Street originally said it had paused the reshuffle during the national period of mourning.

In a farewell letter to staff at the environment department, seen by the Guardian, Goldsmith said he was “very sad” to be leaving after a “whirlwind” three years, before listing his achievements, including in forestry, plastic pollution and the oceans.

He issued what appeared to be a warning to Truss. “We have so much more to do to turn the tide here,” he said. “The UK is, after all, one of the world’s most nature-depleted countries. But if Defra [the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs] continues to get the backing you need and deserve across government, you can and you will turn the tide.”

I'm glad he was arrested. Nobody should be allowed to mess with such an important, national, public ceremony, which hundreds of thousands are taking part in and which millions of others are closely following. Westminster Hall should be kept dignified and incident-free.

Besides, it's also a family that is grieving. I don't particularly love the Royals, but they've lost a loved one – and I believe they deserve to be treated with at least some respect on a human level. I wouldn't be happy if some random nutter tried to spoil the funeral proceedings for one of my family members. It's just really crass.

Bank of England hikes by 50 basis points, says UK may already be in recession

LONDON — The Bank of England voted to raise its base rate to 2.25% from 1.75% on Thursday, lower than the 0.75 percentage point increase that had been expected by many traders. Inflation in the U.K. dipped slightly in August but at 9.9% year-on-year remained well above the bank’s 2% target. Energy and food have seen the biggest price rises, but core inflation, which strips out those components, is still at 6.3% on an annual basis.

The BOE now expects inflation to peak at just under 11% in October, down from a previous forecast of 13%. The smaller-than-expected hike came as the bank said it believed the U.K. economy was already in a recession, as it forecast GDP would contract by 0.1% in the third quarter, down from a previous forecast of 0.4% growth. It would follow a 0.1% decline in the second quarter.

Numerous analysts, along with business association the British Chambers of Commerce, have previously said they expect the U.K. to enter a recession before the end of the year. As well as energy price shocks, it faces trade bottlenecks due to Covid-19 and Brexit, declining consumer sentiment, and falling retail sales.

The BOE dropped its key rate, known as the bank rate, down to 0.1% in March 2020 in an attempt to prop up growth and spending at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. However, as inflation began to rise sharply late last year, it was among the first major central banks to kick off a hiking cycle at its December meeting.
