Sweden votes in Magdalena Andersson as first female PM

Magdalena Andersson has been approved by Sweden's parliament as the country's first ever female prime minister, after replacing Stefan Lofven as leader of the centre-left Social Democrats.

Sweden is the only Nordic country never to have elected a woman as national leader before.

Ms Andersson, who's currently finance minister, did not win Wednesday's vote.

However, she was elected because under Swedish law she only needed a majority of MPs not to vote against her.

A hundred years after Swedish women were given the vote, the 54-year-old Social Democrat leader was given a standing ovation by sections of the parliament, or Riksdag.

Swedish Parliament Reelects Magdalena Andersson as Prime Minister Days After Quitting Post
by Lora Korpar
November 29, 2021

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/sw ... uxbndlbing

Introduction:
(MSN) Magdalena Andersson, who last week became Sweden's first female prime minister before stepping down hours later, was elected to the position again Monday.

The 349-seat Riksdag, Sweden's national legislature, reelected Andersson in a 101-173 vote with 75 abstentions. According to the Associated Press, her cabinet is expected to be named Tuesday.

Andersson was sworn in as prime minister on Wednesday, but following a budget defeat in favor of the right-wing populist Sweden Democrats, her coalition partner, the Green Party, left the two-party minority government.

That caused her to step down due to a Swedish constitutional practice that says a coalition government should resign if one party chooses to leave. She said she did not want her government's legitimacy to be questioned.

Andersson, leader of the Social Democrat party, will now form a one-party minority government instead. Under the Swedish Constitution, prime ministers can remain in power as long as a parliamentary majority—at least 175 lawmakers—is not against them

Sweden approves plan to bury spent nuclear fuel for 100,000 years

JAN 27, 2022

STOCKHOLM, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Sweden's government gave the go-ahead on Thursday for the building of a storage facility to keep the country's spent nuclear fuel safe for the next 100,000 years.

What to do with nuclear waste has been a major headache since the world's first nuclear plants came on line in the 1950s and 1960s. The International Atomic Energy Agency estimates that there is around 370,000 tonnes of highly radioactive, spent nuclear fuel in temporary storage around the globe.

"Our generation must take responsibility for nuclear waste. This is the result of 40 years of research and it will be safe for 100,000 years," Environment Minister Annika Strandhall told reporters at a news conference.

[...]

The plan is to bury the waste - and the fuel that reactors will use until they shut down some time in the 2040s - 500 meters down in the bedrock near the Forsmark nuclear plant.

After about 70 years, when the tunnels are full, they will be packed with bentonite clay to keep out water and the facility sealed up.

Sweden's ruling centre-left in slim election lead, exit poll shows
Source: Reuters

STOCKHOLM, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Sweden's centre-left bloc looked set for a narrow victory over right-wing opponents, an exit poll showed after voting ended on Sunday, although the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats made gains and could become the second-largest party in parliament.

The survey by public broadcaster SVT gave Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson's centre-left bloc 49.8% of the votes against 49.2% for the opposition right-wing parties.

Opinion polls have shown the race too close to call throughout much of the campaign and exit polls can differ from the final result. A TV4 poll on election day also showed the centre-left commanding a narrow lead.

The exit poll predicted the centre-left - led by Andersson's Social Democrats, in power for eight years - would win 176 seats, one more than the 175 needed for a majority in the 349-seat parliament. The right was poised to win 173 seats, the exit poll showed.

Sweden elections: Far-right party and its allies take narrow lead
2 hours ago

A far-right party in Sweden has become the second largest in parliament after an election which is still too close to call.

Sweden Democrats, a group which has neo-Nazi roots, has profited from the country’s shift to the right, which has left it and its allies on the verge of taking power.

With 94 per cent of votes from Sunday’s election counted, the right-wing bloc has a narrow lead over its centre-left opponents.

Early on Monday, projections suggested that the Moderates, Sweden Democrats, Christian Democrats and Liberals would win 176 of the country’s 349 seats, edging the group led by the ruling Social Democrats, which is expected to fall just short on 173.

However, this could still all change, with the Swedish electoral commission saying the final results would not be known until Wednesday at the earliest.

Sweden Sees Nationalist Rise in Historically Close Elections
by Mie Olsen
September 11, 2022

Introduction:
(Courthouse News) The Moderates and the Social Democrats have not diversified much in their political visions and promises to the Swedish citizens during the election campaign. Instead, both candidates have pledged stricter rules on crime, higher levels of safety, and more financial help to cope with the increasing energy prices and inflation.

Gang violence has been an overarching topic in the electoral campaign. Sweden has seen shots fired daily, and the country has already hit its current annual record of 47 shooting victims.

As violence has gradually moved out of the bigger cities to hitherto peaceful suburban areas near schools and kindergartens, the Swedish citizens have put more and more pressure on the politicians for a public safety crackdown.

During the last political duel, a mom by the name of Susanne Yakes left the room in silence by asking the prime minister candidates “how they think it feels to lose a child because they have not managed to put a stop to criminals.”

“This is precisely the reason why I became head of the party and later prime minister," Prime Minister Andersson said later in an interview with the main state news channel of neighboring Denmark. "My biggest priority is to turn over every rock to destroy the gangs and break the circulation driving crime.”

Populist leader says it's 'time to put Sweden first' as he claims right-wing election victory
Source: NBC News

Sweden’s center-left Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson on Wednesday conceded defeat in a weekend election while the leader of a nationalist anti-immigration party declared victory for his right-wing bloc.

Jimmie Akesson, leader of the populist Sweden Democrats, said his party would be “a constructive and driving force in this work” of rebuilding safety in Sweden. He said it was “time to put Sweden first.”

With almost all votes counted, the right-wing bloc of four parties that includes the Sweden Democrats — the country’s second-largest party — appeared to have won a thin majority in parliament. Though a few votes were outstanding they were not enough to sway the final outcome.

You have to be very careful, if a right-wing party comes into government because the far-right may follow with anti-EU/Nato rhetoric.

Swedish PM Magdalena Andersson announces resignation after losing election
September 15, 2022 08:24 IST

Sweden's Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson announced her resignation on Wednesday after losing the election.

Andersson, also leader of the ruling Social Democratic Party, conceded defeat at a press conference following the election on Sunday.

She said she would hand in her resignation notice on Thursday after it emerged that the opposition blue bloc consisting of the Moderate Party, the Christian Democrats, the Liberal Party and the Sweden Democrats, had won 176 of the 349 seats in parliament.

Meanwhile Andersson's red bloc, consisting of her Social Democratic Party, the Left Party, the Green Party, and the Centre Party, won 173 seats, Xinhua news agency reported.

"Tomorrow I will, therefore, request my dismissal as Prime Minister, and the responsibility for the continued process will pass to the Speaker and the Parliament," she said.

Not even a year in and she resigns due to the right-wingers winning.

Ulf Kristersson: Swedish parliament elects new PM backed by far right
Source: BBC
PM Ulf Kristersson's Moderates will form a centre-right coalition with the Christian Democrats and the Liberals.

But it will govern with support from the Sweden Democrats (SD), who won a fifth of votes in recent polls.

Tougher immigration policies and greater police powers are part of a policy deal with the SD.
...
The SD was founded by Nazi sympathisers and had been shunned by the mainstream for decades.

Sweden’s ‘snitch law’ immigration plan prompts alarm across society
Sun 11 Aug 2024 11.31 BST

Doctors, social workers and librarians are among those in Sweden who have sounded the alarm over a proposal being explored by a government-appointed committee that would force public sector workers to report undocumented people to authorities.

The proposal – which has been referred to as the “snitch law” by some – was among the many measures included in a 2022 agreement struck between four rightwing parties in the country. The deal paved the way for a coalition government involving three centre-right parties with parliamentary support from the far-right anti-immigration Sweden Democrats (SD).

Nearly two years after the SD, a party whose manifesto seeks to create one of Europe’s most-hostile environments for non-Europeans, became Sweden’s second-biggest party, work is under way to turn the proposal regarding public sector workers into law. The committee has been instructed by the government to present proposals on how this could be drafted into law, with plans to present their findings to the government by the end of November.

Despite being in the early stages, the idea, which could result in up to a million workers, from dentists to teachers, being forced to report any contact with undocumented patients, students and authorities, has faced widespread opposition from rights campaigners and professional associations.

“This proposal is utterly inhumane,” said Michele LeVoy of the Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants. The impacts could be far-reaching, with people potentially hesitating to send children to school and more reluctant to access healthcare or report crimes committed against them.

Yes, crime in Sweden is bad, but why did you need to link to a post from this moron?

Did you even bother to verify the claims he made? It's absurd to compare Malmo (city struggling with crime) to Baghdad (war zone). Travel advisories from various governments merely urge caution for travel to Sweden, while they advise against all travel to Iraq.

There's also no evidence whatsoever that the number of bombings in Sweden this year has reached 66. Nor is there evidence that Sweden's murder rate is 50% higher than that of El Salvador's. Last year, Sweden saw the lowest level of killings in a decade. Based on those numbers, you'd have a rate of (92 / 10,600,000) * 100,000 ≈ 0.87 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. Meanwhile, estimates for this year so far place El Salvador's rate at 1.16/100K inhabitants. Sure, Sweden's crime rate might have increased over the past 4 months. However, the specific claim made by this moron remains unsubstantiated.
