Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly re-elected in Arizona, defeating Republican Blake Masters
Source: NBC News

Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly is the winner of the Arizona Senate race, NBC News projects, defeating Blake Masters, a Republican backed by former President Donald Trump.

Kelly's projected victory on Friday comes three days after polls closed, and as Arizona officials continued counting ballots that were mailed or dropped off, particularly in the vote-rich Maricopa County, home to Phoenix. It gives Democrats 49 Senate seats, one short of securing a majority, with Nevada still counting votes and Georgia's contest headed to a Dec. 6 runoff.

Kelly ran as a moderate, breaking with Biden on issues like immigration as he sought to navigate headwinds generated by Biden’s low approval rating and widespread economic pain due to rising inflation. He promised to protect abortion rights and build on Democrats’ achievements in recent years, including laws to boost competition with China and to lower prescription drug costs.

Kelly carried moderates by a margin of 63% to 33% and independents by a margin of 55% to 39%, NBC News exit polls showed. Kelly won women by 12 points and lost men by 4 points. Kelly and Masters broke even with white voters but Kelly carried the state's large Latino electorate by 18 points, assuring his victory.

'Take Some Ownership': AOC Hits Back After Defeated DCCC Chair Lashes Out
by Julia Conley
November 11, 2022

Introduction:
(Common Dreams) Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Thursday evening rebuked outgoing Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chair Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, who had earlier claimed in an interview with The New York Times that the progressive congresswoman contributed little to campaign efforts and suggested her policy priorities—several of them popular with Democratic voters—are harming the party.

Ocasio-Cortez has spoken at length to both the Times and The Intercept since Tuesday's midterm elections about progressive politics and the Democratic Party, taking aim at what she called a "calcified political machine" in her home state and blaming decisions by New York State Democratic Committee chair Jay Jacobs and the "infrastructure" built by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo for the party's losses in New York.

Republicans flipped four U.S. House seats in the state and now represent 10 of New York's 26 congressional districts.

The congresswoman, who easily won her own race with more than 70% of the vote, noted that the Republican Party poured millions of dollars into defeating a state ballot initiative which would have protected a district map that was favorable to Democrats.

'People Want the Circus to Stop': Lauren Boebert's Democratic Opponent Still Believes There is a Chance to Unseat Her
by Meaghan Ellis
November 12, 2022

Introduction:
(Alternet) Rep. Lauren Boebert's (R-Colo.) Democratic opponent, Adam Frisch still believes he has a chance to unseat the controversial lawmaker.

On Saturday, November 12, Frisch appeared on MSNBC's "The Katie Phang Show" where he further expounded on his stance while explaining how the lawmaker may have jeopardized her own chances of re-election.

Since voters are still being counted in the state of Colorado, Frisch is not throwing in the towel yet. He believes he will not only have a "moral win" but also a "win win."

"My view is that those who know her [Boebert] best, don't care for her and they wanted another option," Frisch said.

The Congressional hopeful also explained why he believes he has a solid chance of flipping the lawmaker's seat. "This was a referendum election; a lot of people were frustrated with her, there's no doubt about that. You know, Donald Trump delivered tax cuts and regulation chops and three Supreme Court justices," he explained.

Where the Battle for Senate Control Stands After Election Day
by Dylan Scott
November 11, 2022

Introduction:
(Vox) Control of the United States Senate is going to come down to the wire. It will depend on either the results of the race in Nevada or the runoff election in Georgia. As of late Friday, Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly won his first full six-year term against Republican challenger Blake Masters in Arizona, according to the Associated Press, putting Democrats one step closer to retaining control.

Here is where things stand based on what we know so far.

(See article linked below for map showing current status)

Democrats need 50 seats to retain control of the Senate; Vice President Kamala Harris would continue to give them the tie-breaking vote for the next two years. Republicans need 51.

As of Friday evening, both parties have the magic number within sight. Democrats control 49 seats and Republicans will hold at least 49. The GOP is going to win in Alaska, with two Republicans vying for the seat. Two races are still truly up for grabs for each party: Nevada, which is still counting votes, and Georgia, heading for a runoff election next month.

While it may have no effect in determining the balance of power between the two parties in the Senate, this is still an interesting race to watch.

Alaska Senate Race Headed to Ranked-choice Runoff
by Adam Edelman
November 9, 2022

Introduction:
(NBC News) The Alaska Senate race is headed to a ranked choice runoff, as no candidate on the ballot, including the top two vote-getters, GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski and GOP challenger Kelly Tshibaka, will reach 50%, according to NBC News.

However the contest eventually shakes out, the seat will remain in GOP hands. The ranked-choice voting system allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference.

In ranked-choice elections, voters identify first choices on their ballots, then rank the other candidates in order of preference. If no candidate receives a majority of first-choice votes on the first count, the election moves to an instant runoff. The candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and ballots cast for that candidate are recast for voters’ second choices. The process repeats until a candidate reaches a majority.

In 2020, Alaska voters approved a move to nonpartisan primaries that send the top four vote-getters to ranked choice general elections.

Along with Murkowski and Tshibaka, Democrat Patricia Chesbro and Republican Buzz Kelley advanced from the August primary — although Kelley dropped out of the race in September and endorsed Tshibaka. However, he still appeared on the ballot and drew votes.

The article goes on to note that the ranked choice system is likely to benefit Murkowski, who is generally more acceptable to Democrats and independents.
