https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/ ... 063592007/Michigan's Hillsdale College said Thursday it is no longer affiliated with a Florida charter school embroiled in a controversy involving a parent complaint that accused the school of showing students pornography by exposing them to Michelangelo’s “David” statue.
Hillsdale says Tallahassee Classical School's license to use the conservative college's curriculum has been "revoked and will expire at the end of the school year."
"This drama around teaching Michelangelo’s 'David' sculpture, one of the most important works of art in existence, has become a distraction from, and a parody of, the actual aims of classical education," Hillsdale College said in a Thursday news release. "Of course, Hillsdale’s K-12 art curriculum includes Michelangelo’s “David” and other works of art that depict the human form."
Hope Carrasquilla, the principal of Tallahassee Classical, was forced to resign last week after the “David” sculpture was included in a sixth-grade lesson on Renaissance art. One parent complained and said the sixth-graders were exposed to pornography; others requested that the school inform them about the lesson before showing the "David" to their children, the Associated Press reported.

North Carolina Republicans Look To Ax Participation Trophies With New Bill
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/north-ca ... 84198dc5d6
Three North Carolina Republicans are supporting efforts to do away with participation trophies in government-run youth sports leagues.
The GOP-backed bill filed on Thursday would bar local government-operated youth sports or recreation groups from giving “awards for participants based solely on their participation” and restricts awards to those “based on identified performance achievements.”
The bill is sponsored by North Carolina state Sens. Timothy D. Moffitt, Eddie D. Settle and Bobby Hanig.
The proposed ban would require the support of the state Senate, House and a signature from North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) to become law.

Judy Blume: book banning now much worse in US than in 1980s
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/ ... n-in-1980s(Guardian UK) The author Judy Blume says a rise in intolerance in America has led to a “much worse” epidemic of book banning than she experienced in the 1980s.
The children’s and young adult author, whose frank depictions of adolescence and puberty have long caused controversy, said it was time to fight back against censorship.
Her 1975 novel, Forever, which deals with teenage sexuality, was one of 80 books banned in one Florida school district last month, for dealing with issues such as sex, race and gender.
In an interview on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Blume said of book banning: “I thought that was over, frankly … I came through the 80s when book banning was really at its height. And it was terrible. And then libraries and schools began to get policies in place and we saw a falling-off of the desire to censor books.
“Now it is back, it is back much worse – this is in America. It is back so much worse than it was in the 80s. Because it’s become political.” ..............(more)

After clearing gallery, Florida Senate OKs 6-week abortion ban
https://www.orlandosentinel.com/politic ... story.html
TALLAHASSEE — After an emotional debate including outbursts from spectators that prompted the president to clear the gallery, the Florida Senate voted 26-13 on Monday for a six-week ban on abortion.
“This Legislation is unrealistic and a major overreach into our lives, and, in essence, it is a total ban on abortion,” Sen. Linda Stewart, D-Orlando said.
The measure, which outlaws most abortions after six weeks, has been the source of lengthy, intense and emotional debate in both the House and Senate chambers, with legislators sometimes sharing their own abortion stories.
At one point during the debate, Sen. Anna Maria Rodriguez, R-Miami, was speaking in favor of the bill when someone from the audience started shouting.
Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, R-Naples, asked for the Sergeant of Arms, told the audience member to be quiet and halted the debate to demand decorum.
“Visitors in the gallery, this is a very emotional issue,” Passidomo said. “We treat members of both sides of the issue with respect and dignity and if you speak up you’re going to be asked to leave.”

Florida Bill Would Bring Bans on Gender Studies and Critical Race Theory to Colleges and Universities
Gender theory. Ethnic studies. Intersectionality.
Gender theory. Ethnic studies. Intersectionality.
If Florida’s House Bill 999 passes, students at the state’s public colleges and universities would be prohibited from majoring or minoring in these academic disciplines as well as in related fields, including queer theory, critical race theory, feminist theory and social justice.
“The fields that are being threatened are fields that challenge the status quo, and these are well-established, respected disciplines,” said Irene Mulvey, president of the American Association of University Professors. “They enrich academia. They enrich our civilization, but they’re being dragged into the culture wars now. And I feel like these bills are an attempt by people in power to maintain the status quo . . .at the expense of a free and open democratic society.”
Wording in HB 999 has also sparked fears that it could threaten sororities, fraternities and other clubs on campus that cater to Black students and other students of color. Currently in the Florida House’s Education and Employment Committee, HB 999 will take effect July 1 if enacted. Along with its companion legislation in the Florida Senate, the bill is one of the latest introduced in a state that has passed a series of recent laws to limit what students can learn about race, gender, sexuality or inequity.
Another piece of legislation in front of the legislature, HB 1069, would restrict what can be taught in sex education courses in Florida’s public schools, so that abstinence is emphasized and students learn that sex is determined “by chromosomes, naturally occurring sex hormones, and internal and external genitalia present at birth.” Florida’s HB 1223 would prohibit use of pronouns that don’t match a child’s assigned gender at birth and has been described as an expansion of legislation commonly known as “Don’t Say Gay.” Both of these laws would also take effect in July, if enacted.

Idaho governor signs 'abortion trafficking' bill into law, 1st of its kind
https://abcnews.go.com/US/idaho-governo ... d=98399580
Idaho Gov. Brad Little signed a bill into law on Wednesday that makes it illegal for an adult to help a minor get an abortion across state lines without parental consent.
The new law is the first of its kind in the United States and comes less than a year after Idaho banned nearly all abortions.
"With the U.S. Supreme Court's reversal of Roe vs. Wade last summer, the right and duty to establish legal policy on abortion was finally returned to our state democratic process," Little, a Republican, wrote in a letter to Idaho lawmakers on Wednesday, announcing he had signed the legislation.
The text of House Bill 242, which was first introduced to the Idaho Legislature in February, lays out a new crime of "abortion trafficking," in which an adult helps a pregnant, unemancipated minor obtain an abortion or abortion pills "by recruiting, harboring or transporting" them without the consent of their parent or guardian. Anyone who is found guilty of committing the crime will face two to five years in prison and could also be sued by the minor's parent or guardian. A parent or guardian who raped their child will not be allowed to sue.

Texas judge suspends FDA approval of abortion pill mifepristone
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics ... epristone/A federal judge in Texas blocked U.S. government approval of a key abortion medication Friday, siding with abortion foes in an unprecedented lawsuit and potentially upending nationwide access to the pill widely used to terminate pregnancies.
The highly anticipated ruling puts on hold the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone, a medication first cleared for use in the United States in 2000. The ruling will not go into effect for seven days to give the government time to appeal.
U.S. District Judge Matthew J. Kacsmaryk, a nominee of President Donald Trump with long-held antiabortion views, agreed with the conservative groups seeking to reverse the FDA’s approval of mifepristone as safe and effective, including in states where abortion rights are protected.
The Biden administration will probably appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit, and the case could make its way to the Supreme Court. The lawsuit followed the Supreme Court’s elimination of the constitutional right to abortion last June, which allowed states to outlaw or sharply restrict the procedure.

Iowa won't pay for rape victims' abortions or contraceptives
Source: ABC News
Source: ABC News
Read more: https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireSto ... s-98449081The Iowa Attorney General's Office has paused its practice of paying for emergency contraception — and in rare cases, abortions — for victims of sexual assault, a move that drew criticism from some victim advocates.
Federal regulations and state law require Iowa to pay many of the expenses for sexual assault victims who seek medical help, such as the costs of forensic exams and treatment for sexually transmitted infections. Under the previous attorney general, Democrat Tom Miller, Iowa's victim compensation fund also paid for Plan B, the so-called morning after pill, as well as other treatments to prevent pregnancy.
A spokeswoman for Republican Attorney General Brenna Bird, who defeated Miller's bid for an 11th term in November, told the Des Moines Register that those payments are now on hold as part of a review of victim services.
“As a part of her top-down, bottom-up audit of victim assistance, Attorney General Bird is carefully evaluating whether this is an appropriate use of public funds,” Bird Press Secretary Alyssa Brouillet said in a statement. “Until that review is complete, payment of these pending claims will be delayed.”

Florida bill would allow supporters of Confederate monuments to sue over their removal
https://www.heraldtribune.com/story/new ... 085557007/TALLAHASSEE — Supporters of Confederate monuments and other historical markers could sue over removal or destruction of the displays, under a controversial proposal continuing to move forward in the Florida Senate.
In a 6-2 party-line vote, the Republican-controlled Community Affairs Committee on Wednesday backed the bill (SB 1096), which would give standing to people to file lawsuits if they believe they have “lost history” or the ability to teach about the past because of monuments being removed or relocated or because the structures were not protected from damage.
“What I like about these memorials in public places is that everybody has the opportunity to see who we were,” bill sponsor Jonathan Martin, R-Fort Myers, said.
“The older the monument, the more important it is, because it provides a starting point for what our country began as, who led our country,” Martin added. “And looking around in modern-day America, especially many of our big cities, sitting even up here in the committee room, we can look around and see that our America looks a lot different than it did when any of these people who are depicted in monuments were running things."

Iowa Attorney General Halts Plan B and Abortion Assistance for Rape Victims
https://www.yahoo.com/news/iowa-attorne ... 00566.html
https://www.yahoo.com/news/iowa-attorne ... 00566.html
Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird (R), who replaced the state’s Democratic AG of 30 years in November, has paused Iowa’s sexual assault victim compensation fund’s long-time practice of covering emergency contraception and abortions for rape victims, the Des Moines Register reported on Friday. Per a statement from Bird’s spokesperson, the directive comes as part of Bird’s ongoing “top-down, bottom-up audit of victim assistance.”
“Attorney General Bird is carefully evaluating whether this is an appropriate use of public funds,” Alyssa Brouillet, Bird’s press secretary, said in a statement to the Des Moines Register. “Until that review is complete, payment of these pending claims will be delayed.”
Bird, who ironically ran on a platform of “protecting victims”—which she even writes in her Twitter bio—has been vocal about her anti-abortion views. She’s defending the state’s six-week ban in court, after longtime Democratic AG Tom Miller had refused to do so. Under Miller, the state’s victim compensation fund covered the full range of care survivors needed, including emergency contraception and abortion. Upon being elected, Bird asked Sandi Tibbetts Murphy, who directed the fund under Miller, to resign. “My concern is for the victims of sexual assault, who, with no real notice, are now finding themselves either unable to access needed treatment and services, or are now being forced to pay out of their own pocket for those services, when this was done at no fault of their own,” Tibbetts Murphy told the Des Moines Register.

Missouri officials in one county have refused to work with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, or ATF, claiming that the government agency is unconstitutional.
Six top elected officials in Camden County signed a letter to the ATF saying as much, according to the NPR affiliate KCUR 89.3.
"Under the Anti-Commandeering Doctrine, Camden County was the first county in Missouri, and possibly in the country, to pass an ordinance prohibiting any county employee from assisting your unconstitutional agency in violating the rights of our citizens," Ike Skelton, the county's presiding commissioner, said in the letter.

DeSantis declares "Superior Authority" Amendment over Disney's Reedy Creek

DeSantis’ Handpicked Reedy Creek Board Continues Blatant Power Grab, Introduces “Superior Authority” Amendment
https://blogmickey.com/2023/04/desantis ... amendment/
According to the documents we reviewed, the Board plans on introducing a “Superior Authority” section to the RCID Land Development Regulations. The proposed new section would give the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District authority over not only District planning and regulations but also those of the cities of Lake Buena Vista and Bay Lake. The new section, which would be section 7-20.13 of the RCID Land Development Regulations, ensures that the District has absolute authority over the “reviewing, processing, evaluating, commenting on and approving, approving with conditions or denying applications for development orders throughout the District, including within the jurisdictional limits of City of Lake Buena Vista and the City of Bay Lake.”
Another change within section 7 of the RCID Land Development Regulations seeks to replace the Planning Board, which is a separate Advisory Board within the District, with the Board of Supervisors. The amendment would replace the Planning Board as the “local planning agency” with the Board of Supervisors. The Board of Supervisors would then be able to make development decisions and the amendment says that DeSantis’ hand-picked Board would be “the final decision-making authority for the District” and that “no further administrative appeal is available” once the rubber stamp Board has made a decision.

"Don't Say Period": Now Florida wants to ban students from discussing menstruation
https://www.salon.com/2023/04/11/dont-s ... nsuration/(Salon) House Bill 1069, also known as the "Don't Say Period" bill, which passed in Florida's Republican-controlled House at the end of March, means what you think it means.
The bill proposes banning any form of health education until sixth grade and would prohibit students from asking questions about menstruation, including about their own first periods, which frequently occur before the sixth grade. If passed by Florida's Senate and signed into law by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, the ban will be effective July 1.
In response, much has been written about the harms of depriving young people of information about their own changing bodies, and howin such a void, schools will instead be teaching a culture of shame.
It's a dizzying moment.
How do we make sense of a culture in which state-sponsored shame and ignorance is possible in the very same year that Hollywood is set to release the first major motion adaptation of Judy Blume's "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret," an ode to puberty and menstruation, ushering us into what critics have called a Judy Blume-aissance? ............(more)

Ohio GOP aims to amend Ohio Constitution to preempt abortion rights efforts
https://www.daytondailynews.com/local/e ... DSV2P7SHU/
Two Republican-backed bills making their way through the Ohio Statehouse would together pose a major threat to ongoing efforts to protect abortion access through the Ohio Constitution — though neither bill makes any mention of abortion.
They would do this by creating an August special election — months after Ohio lawmakers got rid of most August elections saying they were a waste of money — and putting a constitutional amendment before voters making it harder to amend the Ohio Constitution in the future, such as when the abortion-rights amendment would go before voters in November.
The bills have received scorn from state Democrats and groups like Ohioans for Reproductive Freedom and Ohio Physicians for Reproductive Rights, who are leading the initiative to codify legal abortion into the state constitution. The bills also have fanned the flames of factional feuds within the House GOP.
A lot is riding on the future of these two pieces of legislation between now and November, but it’s unclear how it will play out. This quick explainer will help you get up to date on House Joint Resolution 1 and Senate Bill 92 before it all unfolds possibly in the coming weeks.
