Nvidia Revenue Doubles on Demand for A.I. Chips, and Could Go Higher
Source: The New York Times

Image
In a sign that the tech industry’s next big boom is picking up steam, Nvidia on Wednesday predicted rapid growth in the already rabid demand for the chips it makes to build artificial intelligence systems.

The Silicon Valley company’s products, called graphics processing units, or GPUs, are used to create the vast majority of A.I. systems, including the popular ChatGPT chatbot. Tech companies ranging from start-ups to the industry’s giants are fighting to get their hands on them.

Nvidia said heavy demand from cloud computing services and other customers for chips to power A.I. systems caused revenue for its second quarter, which ended in July, to jump 101 percent from a year earlier, to $13.5 billion, while profit surged more than ninefold to nearly $6.2 billion.

That was even better than what Nvidia had projected in late May, when its $11 billion revenue estimate for the quarter stunned Wall Street and helped push Nvidia’s market value above $1 trillion for the first time.

Nvidia’s prediction and lofty market cap became a symbol for the growing exuberance surrounding A.I., which is transforming many computing systems and the way they are programmed. They also sharply raised the interest in what Nvidia might say the next time about chip demand for its current quarter, which ends in October.

Nvidia projected third-quarter sales of $16 billion, nearly triple the level a year ago and $3.7 billion more than analysts’ average expectations of around $12.3 billion.

The financial performance of chip makers is often considered a harbinger for the rest of the tech industry, and Nvidia’s strong results could reignite enthusiasm for tech stocks on Wall Street. Other tech companies like Google and Microsoft are spending billions and making little on A.I., but Nvidia is cashing in.

Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s chief executive, said major cloud services and other companies were investing to bring Nvidia’s A.I. technology to every industry. “The number of applications is just quite spectacular,” he said in an interview after a conference call with analysts. “Every single data center will be accelerated.”

Nvidia’s share price was up more than 9 percent in after-hours trading.

It's ingenious in other ways: Since you have to upload a photo of someone's face to use the app, the work of identifying human faces and uploading them into the machine's database is crowdsourced.

The types of people and specific people that you search for also reveal information about you, which the app can resell.

Champion-level drone racing using deep reinforcement learning
Source: Nature

Image
Abstract
First-person view (FPV) drone racing is a televised sport in which professional competitors pilot high-speed aircraft through a 3D circuit. Each pilot sees the environment from the perspective of their drone by means of video streamed from an onboard camera. Reaching the level of professional pilots with an autonomous drone is challenging because the robot needs to fly at its physical limits while estimating its speed and location in the circuit exclusively from onboard sensors. Here we introduce Swift, an autonomous system that can race physical vehicles at the level of the human world champions. The system combines deep reinforcement learning (RL) in simulation with data collected in the physical world. Swift competed against three human champions, including the world champions of two international leagues, in real-world head-to-head races. Swift won several races against each of the human champions and demonstrated the fastest recorded race time. This work represents a milestone for mobile robotics and machine intelligence, which may inspire the deployment of hybrid learning-based solutions in other physical systems.

Robotics Sales Decline for Second Straight Quarter Amid Economic Woes
by Brian Heater
August 31, 2023

Introduction:
(TechCrunch) Sooner or later, the numbers were going to contract. Broadly speaking, the pandemic has been a gamechanger for automation broadly and robotics specifically. But not even those categories are immune from macro trends. Per new numbers from the Association for Advancing Automation (A3) — whose job it is to track such things — North American robot orders declined a substantial 37% year-over-year for Q2 (April to July).

The figure, which includes a 20% drop in value, is the second consecutive decline. The two quarters combined represent a 29% drop from H1 of 2022. This most recent half saw a total of 16,856 robots. There are a lot of factors at play here, of course.

Before you go entirely doom and gloom, keep in mind that 2022 was a record year, with 44,196 orders. It was an 11% jump over the previous record — 2021. The fuller story here is notable regression from record growth, dovetailing with the sort of macroeconomic headwinds that have adversely impacted nearly every industry.

Even as an eternal pessimist, I don’t see much cause for panic in these figures. Just as robotic investing was eventually impacted by a slowdown in venture capital, it’s an important reminder that there are few — if any — truly recession-proof industries (depending on how you define the term, I suppose). I’m no economist, but I feel strongly that — taking the long view — we’re dealing with a bump in the road. You’d be hard pressed to find someone who genuinely doesn’t see automation as an inevitability (with all the good and bad it brings).

An interesting wrinkle (and probable silver lining) is the fact that non-automotive robotics comprised a majority of orders, at 52%. While both sides of the coin saw a decline, the figure was far more dramatic with a jaw dropping 49% to non-automotive’s 21%. I say silver lining here because automotive is a space that’s been established for decades. Non-automotive has a far greater growth potential.

Researcher team develops soft valve technology to enable sensing and control integration in soft robots
https://techxplore.com/news/2023-09-tea ... nable.html
by JooHyeon Heo, Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology
Soft inflatable robots have emerged as a promising paradigm for applications that require inherent safety and adaptability. However, the integration of sensing and control systems in these robots has posed significant challenges without compromising their softness, form factor, or capabilities.

Addressing this obstacle, a research team jointly led by Professor Jiyun Kim (Department of New Material Engineering, UNIST) and Professor Jonbum Bae (Department of Mechanical Engineering, UNIST) has developed groundbreaking "soft valve" technology—an all-in-one solution that integrates sensors and control valves while maintaining complete softness.

Traditionally, soft robot bodies coexisted with rigid electronic components for perception purposes. The study conducted by this research team introduces a novel approach to overcome this limitation by creating soft analogs of sensors and control valves that operate without electricity. The resulting tube-shaped part serves dual functions: detecting external stimuli and precisely controlling driving motion using only air pressure.

Google nears release of AI software Gemini, The Information reports
Source: Reuters
Google has given a small group of companies access to an early version of Gemini, its conversational artificial intelligence software, The Information reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Gemini is intended to compete with OpenAI's GPT-4 model, according to the report.

For Google, the stakes of Gemini's launch are high. Google has intensified investments in generative AI this year as it plays catch-up after Microsoft-backed OpenAI's launch of ChatGPT last year took the tech world by storm.

Gemini is a collection of large-language models that power everything from chatbots to features that either summarize text or generate original text based on what users want to read like email drafts, music lyrics, or news stories, the report said.

It is also expected to help software engineers write code and generate original images based on what users ask to see.

Google is currently giving developers access to a relatively large version of Gemini, but not the largest version it is developing which would be more on par with GPT-4, the report said.

The search and advertising giant plans to make Gemini available to companies through its Google Cloud Vertex AI service.

In The Throes Of A Hurricane, An Uncrewed Vehicle Just Smashed A World Record
by Rachael Funnell
September 15, 2023
Introduction:
(IFL Science) An ocean drone coursing through the eyewall of Category 4 Hurricane Sam on September 30, 2021, has broken a Guinness World Record for reaching the highest wind speed ever recorded by an uncrewed surface vehicle (USV). Named Saildrone Explorer SD 1045, it was designed in collaboration with Saildrone and the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, also known as: the discoverers of a mysterious golden orb) to monitor environmental conditions.

The autonomous vehicle doesn’t require a crew to navigate the 7-meter (23-foot) Saildrone through the high seas. Its explorations can last up to a year, and they are powered by a 5-meter (15-foot) rigid sail. Such data collection tools are vital because they can improve our capacity to forecast the weather, meaning that if we can better predict when storms and hurricanes are coming, we can better prepare for them.

“This record is a testament to the unique endurance of the Saildrone platform. We are proud to have engineered a vehicle capable of operating in the most extreme weather conditions on earth, to deliver data that can help to advance understanding of these powerful storms and protect our coastal communities,” said Saildrone Founder and CEO Richard Jenkins in a statement.

Endurance seems a choice word when you get a look at the conditions Saildrone Explorer SD 1045 had to contend with on that momentous day.

The record-breaking weather event makes for a thrilling watch, and it had researchers equally excited over the data.

Toyota upends robot learning: New AI masters complex tasks in hours
By Loz Blain
September 19, 2023
"We've had a bit of a breakthrough." Toyota, MIT and Columbia Engineering have shown off wild results from a new AI learning approach that massively accelerates how quickly robots can acquire new skills. It looks like a ChatGPT moment for robotics.

We are living at the dawn of the general-purpose robotics age. Dozens of companies have now decided that it's time to invest big in humanoid robots that can autonomously navigate their way around existing workspaces and begin taking over tasks from human workers.

Most of the early use cases, though, fall into what I'd call the Planet Fitness category: the robots will lift things up, and put them down. That'll be great for warehouse-style logistics, loading and unloading trucks and pallets and whatnot, and moving things around factories. But it's not all that glamorous, and it certainly doesn't approach the usefulness of a human worker.

Agility Robotics Will Mass Produce 10,000 Humanoid Robots Per Year
September 24, 2023 by Brian Wang
https://www.nextbigfuture.com/2023/09/a ... -year.html
Agility Robotics is making a 70,000 square foot factory to mass produce 10,000 humanoid Digit robots per year. The factory is about half the size of a Costco. They will use the humanoid robots in their own warehouses and factories. They are focused on warehouse and delivery robots.

They have switched to large language model AI for robot control.

Each of Tesla’s gigafactories for building cars is about 10 million square feet of factory floor space. If Agility Robotics or other humanoid robot makers have demand to enable scaling a factory to 10 million square feet then such a factory would make 1.5 million humanoid robots per year.
