Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Wins Historic $290 Million Case Against Giant Monsanto and Roundup Weed-killer

Introduction:

(Irish Central) Environmental lawyer, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. son of the late U.S. Senator, Robert F. (“Bobby”) Kennedy and nephew of the late President, John F. Kennedy, and his team, have won an historic $290 million landmark case against agricultural giant Monsanto and its glyphosate-based product “Round-up” claiming the product likely caused the cancer of their client, plaintiff Dewayne Johnson a former school groundskeeper.
This is the first of thousands of cases of this type to go to trial and Kennedy said, "This (verdict) should send a strong message to the boardroom of Monsanto."

After an eight-week trial, it took the California jury three days to reach their verdict that the agro-chemical giant, Monsanto (a subsidiary of German multinational pharmaceutical company, Bayer AG) and producer of the popular weed-killer, Roundup, had failed to warn Johnson and other consumers of the cancer-causing risk of their products.

Johnson, now 46, was first diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma when he was 42 and attributed his terminal cancer to his extensive use of the glyphosate-containing weed-killer Round-up and other Monsanto products.

According to the Associated Press, "The jury found Monsanto acted with malice and oppression because they knew what they were doing was wrong and doing it with reckless disregard for human life," said Kennedy.

caltrek’s comment: Not mentioned in the article is that RFK Jr. is also a candidate for president. The article is slightly dated, but I noticed that just today there has been discussion of this in the mChat part of this forum. So, I thought a slightly dated article was better than no article at all.

This is a particularly impressive win in that some of what RFK Jr. embraces I would put under the “batshit crazy” heading. Still, I don’t think one wins a lawsuit against a corporate giant like Monsanto without having the goods. You have both the resources on Monsanto to contend with, but also the need to follow the rules of evidence as laid out by what is hopefully an independent judge. So, while other ideas RFK Jr. embraces may be highly problematic, it is likely that he was right on target in this case.

All of this is by way of saying that RFK Jr. needs to be approached with extreme caution. Some of what he believes is spot on correct and worthy of Bernie Sanders, while other beliefs are IMHO rather questionable, to say the least. All in all, he will be an interesting candidate to continue to watch.

She won the governorship after a runoff in 2010 and held the seat until 2017, when she was appointed the United Nations ambassador.

She’s never lost a political contest, Norman said.

“She is Margaret Thatcher with an iron fist and a velvet glove,” he said.

Donald Trump is conjuring his most foreboding vision yet of a possible second term, telling supporters in language resonant of the run-up to the January 6 mob attack on the US Capitol that they need to “fight like hell” or they will lose their country.

The rhetorical escalation from the four-times-indicted ex-president came at a rally in South Dakota on Friday night where he accused his possible 2024 opponent, President Joe Biden, of ordering his indictment on 91 charges across four criminal cases as a form of election interference.

“I don’t think there’s ever been a darkness around our nation like there is now,” Trump said, in a dystopian speech in which he accused Democrats of allowing an “invasion” of migrants over the southern border and of trying to restart Covid “hysteria.”

The Republican front-runner’s stark speech raised the prospect of a second presidency that would be even more extreme and challenging to the rule of law than his first. His view that the Oval Office confers unfettered powers suggests Trump would indulge in similar conduct as that for which he is awaiting trial, including intimidating local officials in an alleged bid to overturn his 2020 defeat. .............(more)

BEAVERTON, Ore. — On Wednesday, September 13, Oregon Treasurer Tobias Read announced his campaign to run for Oregon's next Secretary of State.

In a press release Read said, “I’m running for Secretary of State to restore trust and accountability in this important office.” Read's goal is to ensure that Oregon continues to lead the nation in secure and accessible voting.

Back in 2016 Read was elected as Oregon's State Treasurer and was re-elected in 2020. Prior to that, Read represented the Beaverton area as State Rep from 2007-2017.

Republican Presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, fresh off calls to end U.S. support of Ukraine and his push of 9/11 inside job conspiracy theories, is out with a new one this week: lay off 75% of federal employees, increasing U.S. unemployment by over a million people.

Vivek is proposing that as President he would unilaterally shut down the FBI, The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, (ATF) the Department of Education, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the IRS, the Commerce Department, and the USDA Food and Nutrition services.

He added that he would push for a 50% reduction in federal employment by the end of his first term.

In his announcement of the policy, Vivek pushed the idea that the President should have full control over the "H.R. policies" of all federal government agencies. Not surprising considering it's clear Vivek has never cracked open the constitution, but he appears to believe that the United States is a corporation with the President as the CEO.
