DeSantis Bets Backing Gov't Shutdown Will Get His 2024 Bid Off Life Support
wow, what a sick little man
https://talkingpointsmemo.com/where-thi ... fe-supportAs a 2024 candidate who used the first half of his second term as governor of Florida to pass far-right messaging bills that would ultimately boost his 2024 bid, Ron DeSantis likes the chaos he’s seeing in Congress right now. And he wants to hijack the far-right House Republicans’ hijacking for his own purposes.
A Freedom Caucus founding member, DeSantis reportedly spoke with three current members of the caucus who are threatening a government shutdown on Wednesday. The call lasted about 30 minutes and he told Reps. Chip Roy (R-TX), Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Bob Good (R-VA) by phone, “I got your back. Keep fighting,” Politico reported.
DeSantis reportedly sees a campaign trail advantage in aligning himself with the far-right House Republicans’ charade as they buck party leadership and risk a shutdown, betting that voters back home will be moved by their “anti-woke” headlines and “spending cuts!” sound bites at the polls in 2024. It’s a strategy not dissimilar to DeSantis’ own pre-presidential announcement strategy when he got his Republican-dominated state legislature to pass a bunch of dangerous anti-woke/anti-LGBTQ bills into law in hopes of appealing to the furthest-right members of Donald Trump’s base.
DeSantis has been building toward this kind of messaging shift for a bit. In recent weeks he’s railed against the “D.C. establishment” and criticized both Democrats and Republicans for overspending. The alignment with those making House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) life hell is just the latest move in the direction of austerity virtue-signaling.
wow, what a sick little man

Could A Democrat Actually Win Mississippi’s Governorship?
Wikipedia as of September 16, 2023
Introduction:
caltrek’s comment: While Republican and other conservative pollsters show Reeves with a comfortable lead, Democratic pollsters show a very narrow margin of victory for Reeves or even a tie. It would definitely be an upset for Presley to win, but the fact that there is even serious discussion of that possibility for this deepest of red states is encouraging.
Source regarding recent polling results: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/p ... sissippi/
Brandon Presley is second cousin to the famous and departed singer Elvis Presley.
The race is a focus of an article by John Nichols in The Nation entitled “Mississippi Politics: All Shook Up” published in the September 18/25, 2023 edition.
Wikipedia as of September 16, 2023
Introduction:
Read more here (including footnotes): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Mis ... lection(Wikipedia) The 2023 Mississippi gubernatorial election will take place on November 7, 2023 to choose the governor of Mississippi. Incumbent Republican Governor Tate Reeves is running for re-election to a second and final term in office.[1] Primary elections were held on August 8.[2] Incumbent Republican Governor Tate Reeves won the Republican nomination, while Brandon Presley won the Democratic nomination unopposed.
Background[edit]
A socially conservative Southern state, Mississippi is considered safely Republican at the federal and state level, with both of its U.S. senators, all but one of its U.S. representatives and all statewide officers currently belonging to the Republican Party. In the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump comfortably carried Mississippi by 17 percentage points. Incumbent governor Tate Reeves was first elected in 2019, narrowly defeating then-attorney general Jim Hood, who was the only Democrat elected to hold statewide office in Mississippi at the time.
Most analysts consider Reeves to be a favorite to win reelection, given the state's partisan lean. Nonetheless, some consider the race to have the potential to become competitive, citing factors such as Reeves' narrow victory four years prior and the heavy criticism he has faced for his handling of the Jackson water crisis and for his ties to a welfare corruption scandal, both of which have led him to have the lowest approval ratings of any Republican governor in the country. The Democratic nominee, Brandon Presley, is considered to be a potentially-strong general election candidate; he has represented the Northern district on the Mississippi Public Service Commission since 2008, despite that district having a strong Republican bent, and holds relatively moderate views on social issues, thus fitting the state.[3][4]

Virginia Rep. Jennifer Wexton will not seek reelection after receiving diagnosis update

Read more: https://wtop.com/virginia/2023/09/virgi ... is-update/Virginia Democratic Rep. Jennifer Wexton said she will not seek reelection and will be retiring after receiving an update on her health. While receiving treatment for Parkinson’s disease, Wexton received a modified diagnosis of progressive supranuclear palsy. PSP is a form of atypical parkinsonian syndrome, also known as a Parkinson-plus disorder.
After receiving this diagnosis, the congresswoman said that she will be retiring after the end of her term. “I’m heartbroken to have to give up something I have loved after so many years of serving my community,” Wexton said in a statement. “But taking into consideration the prognosis for my health over the coming years, I have made the decision not to seek reelection once my term is complete and instead spend my valued time with Andrew, our boys, and my friends and loved ones.”
Wexton received the new diagnosis after feeling like she wasn’t responding well to treatment and noticing that the women in her Parkinson’s support group were having a different experience. “I sought out additional medical opinions and testing, and my doctors modified my diagnosis to progressive supranuclear palsy – a kind of ‘Parkinson’s on steroids,'” she said.
PSP is a rare neurological disorder that affects body movements, walking and balance, and eye movements, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Trump calls DeSantis' 6 week abortion ban terrible

“I think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake,” said Trump, who appointed three Supreme Court justices who helped overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling guaranteeing abortion access nationally.
Quote
The new host of “Meet the Press,” Kristen Welker, asked Trump if he’d sign federal legislation that would ban abortion at 15 weeks, a limit that antiabortion groups and some lawmakers have rallied behind.
Trump said no, and said he’d seek to negotiate with Democrats on the issue.

In the interview that aired Sunday, Welker asked Trump again if he would support a federal ban on abortions.
“It could be state or it could be federal, I don’t frankly care,” he said.
