Amid House Speaker Chaos, GOP Confess Attack on Social Security, Medicare Still Top Priority
"Raise your hand if you DON'T want a speaker of the House who is hellbent on cutting your hard-earned Social Security and Medicare," said one Democratic state lawmaker.

In the midst of the second vote on U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan's nomination to be the next House Speaker on Wednesday, one right-wing lawmaker cut through the Republican infighting to remind his fellow GOP members of the common goal they share: cutting programs that millions of Americans rely on to obtain healthcare and afford their day-to-day expenses.

Speaking in favor of the Jordan, Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.) called on his colleagues to recognize the Ohio Republican's so-called "courage" in fighting "to get at the real drivers of debt, and we all know what they are. We all know it's Social Security, we all know it's Medicare, we all know it's Medicaid."

SNIP

Progressives have long warned that as soon as they win the White House and majorities in the House and Senate, Republicans will not hesitate to slash Social Security and Medicare spending, and the party itself regularly claims the two programs are bankrupting the federal government—all while voting in favor of hundreds of billions of dollars in military spending.

An Associated Press/NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll found in April that 79% of Americans oppose reducing Social Security benefits and 67% oppose raising monthly premiums for Medicare, which Republicans have also proposed.

GOP Split on Gambit to Empower Interim House Speaker
by Benjamin Weiss
October 19, 2023

Extract:
(Courthouse News) On Thursday, Jordan signaled that he would not seek to convene lawmakers for a third vote, instead choosing to back a contingency plan kicked around by some House Republicans which would see the House’s temporary speaker, North Carolina Congressman Patrick McHenry, given full leadership authority through the end of the year.

Under the stopgap measure, McHenry would remain in place as speaker pro tempore until January. Jordan would continue as Republicans’ speaker-designee and would likely use the extra time to whip the necessary votes to secure the speakership.

The plan appears aimed at thawing the House — which has been effectively paralyzed all month thanks to the GOP leadership crisis — to allow lawmakers to tackle a backlog of legislative issues, such as the federal budget and foreign aid for Ukraine and Israel.

In order to extend McHenry’s authority, congressional Republicans would need the support of Democrats, who have expressed willingness to cosign such a plan.

Democratic aid will be especially important, as some Republican lawmakers came out Thursday against the gambit to empower the North Carolina congressman.

Edit: MSNBC News is now reporting that Republicans consider this option to now be "dead." What happens next is very unclear.

The only real option at this point is for the moderate republicans to join with the democrats to elect jefferies speaker. If they can't do that then this country is fucked.

In the worst case where no one is willing to compromise no matter what, the Democrats can sue the Republicans for endangering the general welfare of the People and that a Speaker be installed. The Supreme Court can choose a Speaker for both parties. It will be an unprecedented case but I don't see any other way to install a new Speaker if Republicans keep fighting each other.

Or elect Liz Cheney as a compromise speaker.

Venezuelans become largest nationality for illegal border crossings as September numbers surge
By ELLIOT SPAGAT
Updated 10:20 PM CDT, October 21, 2023
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Venezuelans became the largest nationality arrested for illegally crossing the U.S. border, replacing Mexicans for the first time on record, according to figures released Saturday that show September was the second-highest month for arrests of all nationalities.

Venezuelans were arrested 54,833 times by the Border Patrol after entering from Mexico in September, more than double from 22,090 arrests in August and well above the previous monthly high of 33,749 arrests in September 2022.

Arrests of all nationalities entering from Mexico totaled 218,763 in September, up 21% from 181,084 in August and approaching an all-time high of 222,018 in December 2022, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Arrests for the government’s budget year that ended Sept. 30 topped 2 million for the second year in a row, down 7% from an all-time high of more than 2.2 million arrests in the same period a year earlier.

Venezuela plunged into a political, economic and humanitarian crisis over the last decade, pushing more than 7 million people to leave. They initially settled in nearby countries in Latin America but began coming to the United States in the last three years, settling in New York, Chicago and other major cities.

The Biden administration recently announced temporary legal status for nearly 500,000 Venezuelans who were already in the United States on July 31, while vowing to deport those who come illegally after that date and fail to get asylum. It recently began deportation flights to Venezuela as part of a diplomatic thaw with the government of Nicolás Maduro, a longtime adversary.

Tom Emmer Didn’t Help Trump Steal the 2020 Election. It’s Payback Time.
by Jerry Schulman
October 21, 2023
Introduction:
(Mother Jones) —After Republicans finally dethroned Jim Jordan as their speaker of the House nominee Friday, GOP eyes turned to Rep. Tom Emmer. The Minnesota congressman seemed like the natural choice: He engineered his party’s successful effort to retake the House in 2022, and he’s currently the third-ranking Republican in that chamber. Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy quickly endorsed Emmer. “He’ll immediately become the frontrunner,” wrote Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman.

But it turns out Emmer (like the GOP itself) has a pretty big problem: Donald Trump. According to Politico, the former president sees Emmer, who has not endorsed Trump in the primary, as insufficiently sycophantic:
  • In conversations Friday, Trump made clear he was concerned by the prospect of Emmer in the speaker’s chair, telling people he believed the Minnesota Republican was not a fan, according to two people familiar with those private talks. Trump has complained, they say, that Emmer has not forcefully defended him against the indictments he is facing. He has also pointed to Emmer’s criticism of him following the Trump-inspired Jan. 6 Capitol riot, and reports — which Emmer strenuously denied — that as then-chair of the House GOP campaign arm, he advised Republican candidates to avoid mentioning Trump.
Prominent MAGA-world figures amplified that message, warning that Emmer might not do enough to interfere with the Justice Department’s criminal cases against Trump. After all, unlike nearly every other Republican candidate for speaker (including McCarthy), Emmer voted against Trump’s efforts to overturn the presidential election on January 6, 2021. The far-right hasn’t forgotten that betrayal.

“A vote for Tom Emmer is a vote for [special counsel] Jack Smith’s investigation,” declared GOP operative Caroline Wren, a key Trump ally, on Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast Friday, before rattling off a list of complaints about Emmer’s record on everything from Ukraine funding to the debt ceiling. “He certified the fake election. He has been the wrong vote every single time. He is Nancy Pelosi in a suit…I don’t know who the…speaker should be right now, but all I know is I’m [for] anyone but Emmer, and everyone else should be, too.”
