Judge fines Donald Trump more than $360 million, bars him from running businesses in N.Y. for three years

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald ... rcna135283
The judge who presided over a civil business fraud trial against Donald Trump and his company has issued his decision in the case.

Judge Arthur Engoron ordered the former president and the Trump Organization to pay over $364 million in damages, and bars Trump "from serving as an officer or director of any New York corporation or other legal entity in New York for a period of three years."

The judgment is the second this year against Trump after he was hit last month with an $83.3 million verdict in writer E. Jean Carroll's defamation case against him. The former president could also face four criminal trials this year as his presidential campaign barrels toward the November election, with the first set to begin in New York state court on March 25th.

New York Attorney General Letitia James had been seeking $370 million from Trump, his company and its top executives, including his sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, alleging "repeated and persistent fraud" that included falsifying business records and financial statements. James had argued those financial statements were at times exaggerated by as much as $2.2 billion.

E. Jean Carroll's Lawyer Answers Question On Potential Third Lawsuit Against Trump

Source: Huff Post

Feb 20, 2024, 05:20 AM EST

Lawyers for the writer E. Jean Carroll are “watching” and “listening” to Donald Trump’s comments about their client following his latest false claim that he didn’t know who she was, Carroll’s attorney Shawn Crowley told MSNBC’s Jen Psaki on Monday. Psaki suggested to Crowley that Trump, over the weekend, “came awfully close to defaming” Carroll once again when he told supporters: “Who the hell is she? Who is the woman?”

Psaki pointed out, “Trump knows exactly who your client is.” A jury last year ordered Trump to pay Carroll $5 million in damages after it found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation after Carroll accused him of raping her in the mid-’90s. Another jury in January ordered Trump to pay Carroll $83.3 million after he defamed her again.

Psaki noted, “He was found liable for sexually abusing her and then defaming her by lying about it. Do you watch these, and could this warrant a third suit as you watch that?”

“We certainly watch them. It’s hard not to,” Crowley replied. “Every time Donald Trump speaks, you know, I think as we said at trial many times, he has the biggest megaphone in the world, and so everyone hears them, including us and including our client, E. Jean Carroll. And as you said, what he said was absolutely a lie.”

Trump said he’s running against Obama. Stop downplaying his memory lapses.

The article below relates to the Trump created Big Lie to discredit the 2020 election process. It is good to see the Supreme Court avoiding an extremely reactionary position of undermining the lower court's decision.

Supreme Court Rejects Appeals to Review Sanctions Against Trump-allied Lawyers Over 2020 Election Case
February 20, 2024

Introduction:
WASHINGTON (AP via NPR) — The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected an appeal from Sidney Powell and other lawyers allied with former President Donald Trump over $150,000 in sanctions they were ordered to pay for abusing the court system with a sham lawsuit challenging the 2020 election results in Michigan.

The justices did not comment in leaving in place the sanctions against seven lawyers who were part of the lawsuit filed on behalf of six Republican voters after Joe Biden’s 154,000-vote victory over Trump in the state.

Among the lawyers is L. Lin Wood, whose name was on the lawsuit. Wood has insisted he had no role other than to tell Powell he would be available if she needed a seasoned litigator.

The money is owed to the state and Detroit, for their costs in defending the lawsuit. The sanctions initially totaled $175,000, but a federal appeals court reduced them by about $25,000.

In October, Powell pleaded guilty to state criminal charges in Georgia over her efforts to overturn Trump’s loss in the state. She pleaded guilty to six misdemeanors accusing her of conspiring to intentionally interfere with the performance of election duties.

I wouldn't be surprised if he believed he were God, but this seems more metaphorical than anything to me.

I went to Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) as an Anthropologist to Understand Trump’s Base − They Believe, More than Ever, He is a Savior
by Alexander Hinton
February 26, 2024

Conclusion:
(The Conversation) According to his base, Trump delivered on abortion by appointing Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade. They believe that, despite evidence of mixed results, Trump had wide successes at securing the border and creating jobs. For example, during Trump’s time as president, the U.S. economy lost nearly 3 million jobs, and apprehensions of undocumented migrants at the border rose.

Trump’s CPAC speech, like his campaign speeches, harped on such supposed achievements – as well as Biden’s alleged “destruction” of the country.
Conservatives roll their eyes at liberal fears of Trump the despot. Like all of us, they acknowledge, Trump has flaws. They say that some of his comments about women and minorities are cringeworthy, but not evidence of an underlying misogyny and hatefulness, as many critics contend.

Ultimately, CPAC conservatives believe Trump is their best bet to defeat the radical-left “desecrators” who seek to thwart him at every turn – including, as they constantly complained at CPAC, social media bans, “fake news” takedowns, rigged voting, bogus lawsuits, unfair justice, and lies about what they call the Jan. 6, 2021, “protest”.

Despite these hurdles, Trump battles on toward the Republican nomination for presidential candidate – the hero who CPAC conservatives view as the last and best hope to save the USA.

Trump appeals New York civil fraud verdict

Source: CNBC

PUBLISHED MON, FEB 26 2024 9:55 AM EST UPDATED 11 MIN AGO
Former President Donald Trump on Monday filed a notice of appeal of the New York civil judgment finding him liable for fraudulently inflating his net worth on years of financial statements.

The legal challenge came less than two weeks after Judge Arthur Engoron ordered Trump to pay more than $450 million in fines and interest for his fraudulent business practices. Engoron also barred Trump for three years from running a business in New York or applying for loans from financial institutions registered with the state.

Trump’s post-judgment interest will continue to accrue at $111,984 each day until it is paid, according to the office of New York Attorney General Letitia James, who brought the case against Trump and his company.

Trump’s co-defendants, including Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., a slew of Trump Organization entities and two of its executives, joined Monday’s appeals. The defendants are appealing “each and every part” of Engoron’s judgment and order in two notices of appeal, court filings showed.
