EXCLUSIVE: Conservative Party 'Contributing to Extremism and Undermining Democracy' Voters Say After Sunak's 'Mob Rule' Rant
8 MAR 2024

Voters simply do not buy Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s claims that “mob rule” and extremists have taken over Britain – and argue instead his party is contributing to anti-Muslim hate and undermining democracy.

Last Friday, following George Galloway’s election in Rochdale following a fraught, Gaza-focused campaign, PM Sunak urged the country to “face down the extremists who would tear us apart”.

It was quickly blasted as hollow. The PM had failed to robustly condemn Lee Anderson, the former Deputy Chair of the Conservative Party, who claimed that London Mayor Sadiq Khan was under the influence of "Islamist" associates. Sunak also refused to withdraw the whip from ex-Home Secretary Suella Braverman, who penned an article in the Telegraph, claiming that “the Islamists, the extremists, and the antisemites are in charge now” over the weekly London pro-ceasefire protests.

Nor did he act when former Prime Minister Liz Truss claimed that “radical Islam is becoming mainstream in British politics” and stayed silent while her far-right US interviewer Steve Bannon praised EDL thug Tommy Robinson. Truss is courting the radical right on the global stage, and he will do nothing about it.

Now an exclusive new poll conducted by WeThink for Byline Supplement suggests the British public has widespread concerns over the Conservative party's role in the so-called culture wars.

^^^I would trust the expertise of the writer more if he was describing how a dictatorship in Turkey was avoided.

I agree that Trump will not be able to be a dictator on day one. Still, his election would be a significant step in that direction. If a large number of "citizens" cheer him on as he dismantles and/or overrides democratic institutions, his task will be that much easier.

Given Trump's advanced age, a lot will depend upon his successor. If such a successor turns out to also have dictatorial aspirations and is supported by a significant share of the public, this could cause very real problems. The farther we go down that road, the more difficult it will be to return. The fascist movement will gain a life of its own. Elections, especially for president, will become increasingly irrelevant. Institutions such as Congress and the courts will atrophy over time or be dominated by like thinking fascists. The United States will become not so united. Some states will be hold-outs for democracy at the state level, while others will fall into the fascist fold. Indicators will be issues such as a women's right to choose an abortion, human rights for women, a return of a racial apartheid system, a loss of voting rights by members of certain minority groups, a return of extreme discrimination against members of the LGBT+ community, extreme anti-immigration policies that may even extend into deporting native-born persons of color, support for the fossil fuel industry and an end to any incentives to the renewable energy industry, etc. The federal government will be inclined to assist local fascists in their goals and the courts will largely fail to uphold constitutional norms. Again, this process will take time. It will not be totally irreversible, but the farther we go the harder it will be to return.

At the federal level, the government will align itself with right wing dictatorships in its foreign policy and may abandon traditional allies. This will not be totally unprecedented. Think of U.S. support of Pinochet in Chile, for example.

The time to stop this rightward lurch is now. Trump and politicians that follow his leadership must be decisively defeated at the polls, NOW. Only a series of defeats of the more extreme right-wing elements of the Republican party can result to a return (if you can call it that) to a two-party system in which both parties respect democratic norms. We are truly at a pivotal point in our history.
Don't mourn, organize.

Suella Braverman to appear at National Conservatism conference alongside Hungarian autocrat Viktor Orban
21 hours ago

Suella Braverman will appear at a major Conservative conference alongside right-wing Hungarian autocrat Viktor Orban next month.

The former home secretary and Mr Orban have been unveiled as a keynote speakers at the National Conservatism (NatCon) conference in Belgium.

Mr Orban is widely seen as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest ally in the European Union and has been accused of launching a crackdown on gay rights and press freedom.

Ms Braverman, who was sacked by Rishi Sunak in November after accusing Metropolitan Police chiefs of bias in their handling of the pro-Palestine protests, risks a backlash for appearing alongside the Hungarian prime minister.

Mr Orban has previously spoken at the annual conference of the International Organisation of the Family (IOF), described by the Human Rights Campaign as a “dangerous group of activists spreading anti-LGBT rhetoric and promoting laws and policies that criminalise LGBT people”.

Germany fans banned from buying number 44 kits over Nazi symbolism
1 hour ago

Image

Adidas has banned football fans from buying German football kits customised with the number 44, after media raised its resemblance to the symbol used by World War Two-era Nazi SS units.

"We will block personalisation of the jerseys," an Adidas spokesman said.

SS units were the most responsible for crimes against humanity committed by the Nazis.

The newly released kit has also caused controversy with its choice of pink for the away colours.

The issue was first raised by historian Michael König, who said the design of the kits was "very questionable".
