Apple reported fiscal second-quarter earnings on Thursday that were slightly higher than Wall Street expectations, but showed overall revenue down 4%, and iPhone sales falling 10%. Apple announced that its board had authorized $110 billion in share repurchases, the largest in the company’s history, and a 22% increase over last year’s $90 billion authorization.
Apple shares rose 3% in extended trading. Apple did not provide formal guidance, but Apple CEO Tim Cook told CNBC’s Steve Kovach that overall sales would “grow low single digits” during the June quarter. Apple posted $81.8 billion in revenue during the year-ago June quarter and LSEG analysts were looking for a forecast of $83.23 billion.
Apple reported $23.64 billion in net income, a 2% decrease from $24.16 billion in the year-earlier period. Overall sales fell 4% in the March quarter.
Cook told CNBC’s Steve Kovach that year-over-year sales suffered from a difficult comparison to the year-ago period, when the company realized $5 billion in delayed iPhone 14 sales from Covid-based supply issues.

Apple apologises for crushing musical instruments and books in 'tone-deaf' iPad Pro advert
Friday 10 May 2024 12:29, UK
Apple has apologised for its new iPad Pro advert where it crushed cameras, books and musical instruments, saying it "missed the mark".
The advert - shared online by Apple chief executive Tim Cook - also featured creative tools such as a record player and a metronome being crushed in an industrial press.
It was intended to show off the wide range of tools that the thinnest ever iPad can be used for.
But the advert came under fire, with actor Hugh Grant saying it showed the "destruction of the human experience. Courtesy of Silicon Valley".
In a statement, Apple's vice president of marketing communications Tor Myhren said: "Creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it's incredibly important to us to design products that empower creatives all over the world. Our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad. We missed the mark with this video, and we're sorry."

Analyst: Apple to Use TSMC 2nm Chips for the iPhone 18 Pro in 2026

Apple's newest iPhones began arriving on doorsteps around the country Friday morning, and they're packing chips made with TSMC's second-generation 3nm process. Apple was reportedly looking to jump to TSMC 2nm for next year's phones, but since TSMC likely won't start 2nm production until late in the year, a respected analyst is now saying Apple will be forced to use 3nm chips once again in 2025 before moving to 2nm in 2026.
The iPhone 16 family of phones all use a chip called A18, which is made by TSMC. Both chips are made on a second-generation 3nm process, and appear to be the same aside from a binned version used in the non-Pro phones. The process Apple is using for the iPhone 16 is very likely TSMC N3E, and according to famed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, it's expected to move to N3P for the iPhone 17 lineup in 2025. Looking ahead to 2026, Apple will once again be first in line for TSMC's 2nm chips as well. But due to their reported high cost, Kuo states only the Pro phones will get 2nm chips in 2026.

One of the buzziest products at CES 2025 is far simpler than any massive, crisp-pictured TV or next-gen EV for street and sky. The all-new Swippitt IPS is a fast power-up solution for mobile phones. Forget handcuffing your iPhone to an electrical socket or wireless dock for the next two hours, simply drop it into the toaster-like Swippitt Hub and walk away with a fully charged battery in a matter of seconds.
Two-second charging sounds too good to be true because it is. Swippitt hasn't managed to eradicate the concept of charging time with some type of mega-voltage miracle charger. Instead, it's developed what it calls an Instant Power System (IPS), a simple but smart solution blending cutting-edge digital and more basic mechanical tech into a quick, convenient battery-swapping ecosystem.
Swippitt debuted the IPS hardware at CES 2025 and plans to begin shipping to customers in June

Apple Violated Antitrust Ruling, Judge Finds
Source: Wall Street Journal
Source: Wall Street Journal
Read more: https://www.wsj.com/tech/apple-violated ... ?st=tuFwD4A federal judge hammered Apple for violating an antitrust ruling related to App Store restrictions and took the extraordinary step of referring the matter to federal prosecutors for a criminal contempt investigation.
“Apple willfully chose not to comply with this court’s injunction,” Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers said in a ruling late Wednesday that specifically chided Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook and alleged that another company executive lied under oath. “It did so with the express intent to create new anticompetitive barriers.”
The order is the latest twist in a long-running legal dispute between Apple and Epic Games, developer of the popular videogame “Fortnite.” It accused Apple of monopolistic behavior in a 2021 case related to the tight controls it imposes over app makers.
Rogers largely ruled in Apple’s favor in the 2021 case but required the iPhone maker to allow developers to offer users alternative methods for paying for services and subscriptions outside the App Store.

Apple expects $900 mn tariff hit, US iPhone supply shifts to India
Apple on Thursday reported first-quarter profit above expectations but warned that US tariffs could cost the company and were disrupting its supply chain.
Apple expects US tariffs to cost $900 million in the current quarter, even though their impact was "limited" at the start of this year, chief executive Tim Cook said on an earnings call.
Cook said he expected "a majority of iPhones sold in the US will have India as their country of origin," adding that Apple's products were exempt from Trump's most severe reciprocal tariffs for now.
"We are not able to precisely estimate the impact of tariffs, as we are uncertain of potential future actions prior to the end of the quarter," Cook said.

Apple iPhone fans may soon feel like their parents, who had to watch their baby grow up way too fast. The latest reports suggest the tech giant won’t stick to its old naming convention. The expected iOS 19 will instead be called iOS 26 to line up with the year following now. All your Apple products, from your iPad to your Mac to your Apple Watch, will all sport the new nomenclature and a blanket redesign. If all goes according to plan, next year’s update will be named iOS 27, and so on.

Apple executives have been discussing the probable acquisition of Perplexity, a fast-growing AI startup valued at $14 billion, as reported by Bloomberg. These talks are said to be in the early stages, and there has not yet been any direct contact between Apple and Perplexity’s management regarding an offer. Perplexity has responded to the media by saying it has no knowledge about any of it. Apple has not commented on the matter.
Apple is interested in adding new AI-powered search tools to its products and could include features in its Safari browser. This could also mean a change from its long-standing partnership with Google, which pays Apple billions each year to remain the default search engine on Apple devices.
Google has also introduced an AI mode similar to Perplexity's, so it will be interesting to see how it all pans out. As reported by Reuters, the U.S. Department of Justice has proposed banning Google from paying companies to make it their default search engine, which could affect Apple’s current arrangement.
