Attempted Trump Assassination Triggers a Flood of MAGA BS
by David Corn
July 14 , 2024

Introduction:
(Mother Jones) It is hardly surprising that a political movement that has as its godhead a convicted felon and inveterate liar who attempted to overturn an election and incited a violent assault on the US Capitol to retain power would within nanoseconds exploit the assassination attempt at a Donald Trump rally that left one attendee dead. But the utter brazenness of this effort has been stunning. Before crucial details were known—who’s the shooter? why did he do this?—MAGA was out in full-force to blame President Joe Biden, Democrats, and progressives for this shooting by stirring up anti-Trump sentiment. Leading the way in unhinged right-wing responses, Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.) called for Biden to be arrested for “inciting an assassination.”

Even after it emerged that Thomas Matthew Crooks, the alleged shooter, was a registered Republican (who apparently made a $15 donation to a liberal political action committee in 2021), the crap kept coming. Sean Parnell, a right-wing commentator who in 2021 suspended his Senate campaign in Pennsylvania after his wife accused him of spousal and child abuse, tweeted at Biden: “It happened because of this sort of BS rhetoric from you & the rest of your party. It’s sickening. It needs to stop.”

(See linked article for Twitter feed)

At this point, there was not yet any indication the shooter had been influenced by anything any politician had stated.

J.D. Vance, the ultra-thirsty Republican senator from Ohio who is angling to be Trump’s veep pick and who once compared Trump to Hitler, said the same: “Today is not just some isolated incident. The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.”

On CNN, GOP consultant Scott Jennings remarked, “The rhetoric around him over the last few weeks, that if he wins an election our country will end, our democracy will end, it’s the last election our we’ll ever have. These things have consequences.”

caltrek’s comment: I largely agree with Corn. The only exception where I think Biden went too far was his “bullseye” comment:
(BBC) According to Politico, Biden said on the call: “I have one job, and that’s to beat Donald Trump. I’m absolutely certain I’m the best person to be able to do that. So, we’re done talking about the debate. It’s time to put Trump in a bullseye."

Conservative Pollster Slaps Down Belief Trump Will Add Voters After Assassination Attempt
by Tom Boggioni
July 14, 2024

Introduction:
(Raw Story) Hours after Donald Trump was wounded during an apparent assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, noted conservative pollster Frank Luntz tamped down hopes by conservatives that the former president will get a boost in his bid to win re-election after losing in 2020.

With multiple commenters on X, formerly Twitter, asserting that Trump will now stroll to a win, Luntz pushed back and said that, at best, the former president firmed up his support within his existing base.

He then added a cautionary note.

"This doesn’t guarantee that Trump flips Pennsylvania. But the long and winding road for Joe Biden just became even longer and windier. Just as what happened to George Floyd had a lasting impact on tens of millions of Americans, the shooting of Donald Trump will be significantly consequential in a way the shooter never intended," he suggested.
(See linked article for Twitter feed from Frank Luntz on this topic).

Plans to Extend and Expand Trump-Era Tax Cuts Would Largely Benefit the Wealthy
by Marcus Baram
July 16, 2024

Introduction:
(Capital and Main) In the first presidential debate of 2024, tax policy — and who it really benefits in this country — were among the issues most fiercely debated by Donald Trump and President Biden. Trump repeated his vow to extend his 2017 tax cuts and falsely claimed that Biden wants to raise taxes “by four times.” Biden shot back by describing how Trump’s tax cuts “rewarded the wealthy” and that he just wants them to “pay their fair share,” since he’d raise taxes only on those earning over $400,000 a year.

While cutting taxes for the rich may be out of step with a majority of American voters — 60% of whom feel that wealthy people don’t pay their fair share, per a Pew Research poll in April — Trump often touts his tax cut promise, especially when he’s in front of audiences made up of major donors and corporate executives.

“You’re all people that have a lot of money,” he told a group of donors gathered at Mar-a-Lago for a fundraising dinner in December to support North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson. “You’re rich as hell. We’re gonna give you tax cuts.” He’s repeated that promise multiple times since then — and it seems to appeal to wealthy people and Wall Street executives who have been opening their checkbooks and contributing to his campaign.

Biden has emphasized that he’ll let both the personal income and corporate tax cuts included in Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) die when they expire in 2025: “If Trump gets elected, he’ll cut taxes for him and his rich friends at the expense of working families. We can’t let that happen,” the president said on social media on June 12. And Biden has revived talk of his wealth tax proposal — a 25% tax on Americans with a net worth of more than $100 million.

This will likely be the most controversial opinion I've stated on this forum, a part of me would actually prefer JD Vance over Kamala Harris as Artificial Intelligence Czar. At least in his case, as a Silicon Valley type, he's actually educated on the topic, especially as far as open sourced is concerned.

We could see much quicker advancement and innovation under his purview, and not only would the MegaCorps have absolute dominion in this space. No doubt they'd still have the most advanced AI overall, but at least regulatory capture would get a sufficient kneecap enough where we wouldn't fall behind relying on said MegaCorps exclusively.

Huh, so plans to extend and expand plans made specifically to benefit the wealthy to begin with will largely only benefit the wealthy even more?
I'm shocked, shocked I tell you!
