This is wonderful. Harris seems to have inherited the working-class spirit of Bernie Sanders, focusing on actual issues which have become a daily reality for Americans. A question for the UK members if they wish to answer it: How would you personally compare Kamala/Walz to your UK Labour politicians, based on policy? Would they be a natural fit within that party or a different one? There's always this assumption about how "left" or "radical" someone is in America, but I'd be more interested in hearing how they actual rate to mainstream international policy.

Harris outlines an ‘opportunity economy’ centered on cutting food, housing, family costs

Source: cnbc
Vice President Kamala Harris outlined her plan to create an “opportunity economy” by focusing on lowering the costs of food, housing, health care and childcare.

Her plan includes a federal ban on price gouging on groceries, a new $6,000 child tax credit for families with newborns and a $25,000 boost for first-time home buyers.

Harris framed her plan in stark contrast to the proposals put forward by her Republican rival, former President Donald Trump.

There are also plans of healthcare expansion.

The way Kamala described her past UHS back in 2019 reminds me of the German UHS or "Bismarck" model, at least the lead towards such a healthcare system.

I hate to say it but the price controls are probably going to be used effectually by the republicans to steal 2-3% of the moderates back. We may get another 4 years of Trump. This sick fucking country may elect a convicted felon.

I personally like it and wish she'd promise to 1. increase minimum wage to $12 per hour federally from 7.25 and 2. Increase taxes on the top 5% back to pre-Reagan. lol The rich are taking it all but there's too many fucking loserterians in this country!

She could say that the tax increase is to pay for the housing plan.

***# 1 RATED NYT- SIENNA POLL*** Shows Harris Ahead in AZ and NC, Slightly Behind In NV and GA
Vice President Kamala Harris has stormed into contention in the fast-growing and diverse states of Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina, not long after Donald J. Trump had seemed on the verge of running away with those states when President Biden was still the Democratic nominee.

The new polls from The New York Times and Siena College show how quickly Ms. Harris has reshaped the terrain of 2024 and thrust the Sun Belt back to the center of the battleground-state map.

Ms. Harris is now leading Mr. Trump among likely voters in

We gonna be fine. Kamala's able to consistently reiterate her plans while Donald can't help but go back to rambling after a while.

‘Turning Into the Super PAC Election': Outside Spending Tops $1 Billion for 2024
by Brett Wilkins
August 16, 2024

Introduction:
(Common Dreams) Empowered by the U.S. Supreme Court's 2010 Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission ruling allowing unlimited independent financial contributions to support political campaigns, outside spending during the current election cycle has hit a record $1 billion, according to a report published Thursday by the watchdog group OpenSecrets.

"Super PACs and other outside groups that can raise and spend unlimited sums of money have poured about $1.1 billion into 2024 federal elections as of August 15—nearly twice what similar groups spent over the same period in the 2020 presidential election cycle when independent expenditures hit an all-time record," OpenSecrets said.

"More than half of all outside spending during the 2024 cycle— about $585.8 million—has gone into the presidential election, which saw an especially expensive Republican presidential nominating contest," the group added.

"The largest spender, by far, is former President Donald Trump's flagship super PAC, Make America Great Again Inc.," the report notes. "To date, MAGA Inc. has spent about $125.1 million boosting Trump in the presidential election, including nearly $33.2 million attacking his GOP rivals and more than $65.6 million opposing President Joe Biden."

“Future Forward and American Bridge 21st Century, the first and second-largest Democratic hybrid PACs, have spent a combined $74.7 million on the presidential race as of August 15," the publication adds. "Both super PACs pivoted to supporting Vice President Kamala Harris after Biden suspended his campaign last month."

More on that:
(Yahoo News) Presidential candidate Cornel West in Detroit on Feb. 5, 2024 | Ken Coleman

The state Bureau of Elections on Friday disqualified independent presidential candidate Cornel West from the Nov. 5 general election ballot over a technical violation of state law.

West was disqualified for failing to have his candidate affidavit properly notarized, which invalidated the required document. Challenges were filed with the Michigan Department of State office by veteran elections lawyer and former Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer, on behalf of Rosa Holliday, to the affidavits of identity submitted by West and Melina Abdullah on July 23.

An email to the West campaign by the Advance was not returned.

Additionally, Clear Choice Action, which had filed a sworn complaint challenging the qualifying petitions filed by the Cornel West campaign in Michigan due to widespread evidence of fraudulent and forged signatures, released the following statement in response to West’s disqualification:

Lindsey Graham warns Trump ‘the provocateur’ in danger of losing election
Sun 18 Aug 2024 17.05 BST

The Republican senator and Donald Trump loyalist Lindsey Graham has warned that Trump is in danger of losing the US presidential election if he continues to talk about Kamala Harris’s race and make other personal attacks instead of focusing on policy issues.

Graham’s comments came on Meet The Press when asked whether he agreed with Nikki Haley’s recent admonition that Trump and Republicans should “quit whining” and stop “talking about what race Kamala Harris is”.

“Yeah. I don’t think – I don’t look at vice-president Kamala Harris as a lunatic,” Graham told moderator Kristin Welker. “I look at her as the most liberal person to be nominated for president in the history of the United States.”

He said the election should be fought on policy. “A nightmare for Harris is to defend her policy choices,” he said.

“President Trump can win this election,” Graham continued. “If you have a policy debate, he wins. Donald Trump the provocateur, the showman, may not win this election.”
