Democratic Convention Starts
by Marina Pitofsky, Joey Garrison, Maya Homan, Sudiksha Kochi, Karissa Waddick and Savannah Kuchar
August 19 , 2024

Extract:
(USA Today) Over the next four days, Democrats will make their pitch to voters across the country from their Chicago convention. The moment caps off a tumultuous few months for the party, stretching from President Joe Biden's disastrous debate performance against former President Donald Trump to his decision to not seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris' rise to the top of the ticket and her choosing Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate.

But over the next week, Democrats will be focused on the future: Telling Americans how a potential Harris-Walz administration would address inflation, the southern border, abortion rights and other top debates facing the nation.

Biden is giving the closing address on Monday, and the president is expected to pass the torch to Harris and Walz after ending his own reelection bid

So after all this time, things favour Harris somewhat but it's still pretty much a tossup. Great...

I'm trying not to be immensely depressed about this concept. Somewhere between 44-48% of American voters have looked at the past 8 years of Trump and said, "yes, more of that, please." Cool.

The felony convictions don't matter, the further pending charges don't matter, the rape stuff doesn't matter, the massive amount of lies don't matter, his age doesn't matter. Nothing matters.

It's definitely a part of why I've completely lost faith in democracy over the past 5-ish years.

American "democracy" influenced heavily by the corporate welfare apparatus. Hopefully Harris/Walz is the beginning of a move towards a social democratic model. For a lot of people, only a real material difference in their daily lives/living standards will affect their voting intentions. One could take solace in the fact that Harris is doing this well at all given it's only been roughly a month, and her own public perception has shifted.

I know someone from the outside looking in would say that should've been true of anyone and DJT should be even more unfavorable based on your points, but there is going to have to be a real cultural shift as well before we begin to function as a "normal" country. Always remember that Trump himself is merely an American product, not the root cause of the problem. He gets away with these things because it's an inherent flaw in a very imperfect system.

On another note, AOC sounded like an actual future presidential candidate at the DNC last night and seems to have a great future ahead of her. The future doesn't have to be as grim as all that, so long as people remember they have the actual choice to make it so.

Secret Service’s “Ground Force One” Presidential Armored Bus Emerges Wrapped For Harris-Walz Campaign
by Jospeh Trevithick
August 20, 2024

Introduction:
(The Drive) Keen-eyed observers may have noticed something unusual about one of the buses that Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz used during a recent campaign tour in Pennsylvania. Though wrapped in a livery pledging a “New Way Forward” for America, the vehicle underneath was one of the U.S. Secret Service’s heavily customized and armored “Ground Force Ones.”

Other presidential candidates and their running mates, including former Vice President Mike Pence, have also made use of the bespoke Secret Service buses covered in their respective campaign colors in the past. Specialized transportation methods, including trains, have long been a central feature in U.S. presidential election campaigning, as well.

“Per U.S. Office of Special Counsel guidelines, the U.S. Secret Service may permit presidential and vice presidential candidates under U.S. Secret Service protection to wrap agency buses for use during their campaigns, with the requirement that candidates pay for all expenses related to the bus wrapping,” Alexi Worley, a spokesperson for the agency, told The War Zone.

The use of Ground Force Ones with explicit partisan wrapping is compliant with the Hatch Act as long as it is not restricted to candidates from one party or another, a U.S. Secret Service official, speaking on background, added. The Hatch Act, also known as An Act to Prevent Pernicious Political Activities, which first became law in 1939 and has been amended multiple times since then, imposes limits on how and when federal employees can engage in partisan political activity.

The War Zone has reached out to the U.S. Office of Special Counsel for more information about the laws and regulations impacting the use of the Ground Force One buses for presidential campaigning. It’s also unclear whether the legal guidance relating to the buses might extend to other platforms, like the Secret Service’s specialized presidential limousines, nicknamed “Beasts,” or military aircraft like the VC-25A Air Force One jets.

All Living Democratic Presidents Unite for Harris
by Avery Lotz
August 21, 2024

Introduction:
(Axios) Democratic presidents spanning nearly five decades in office are using the Democratic National Convention stage to rally behind Vice President Kamala Harris as the face of the party's next era.

Why it matters: Jason Carter, representing his grandfather former President Jimmy Carter, former President Barack Obama and President Biden all tied Harris to the party's legacy in their DNC addresses this week, appealing to renewed Democratic unity after fractures were exposed before Biden left the race.

• Former President Bill Clinton will take the DNC stage later today. His remarks follow his wife Hillary Clinton's emotional proclamation Monday that Harris will be the trailblazer to "break through" the glass ceiling.

• Jack Schlossberg, the only grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, also spoke at the convention Tuesday.

The other side: The support for Harris from all three living ex-Democatic presidents and Biden is in contrast to the GOP, where former President George W. Bush and former President Trump are the only living former Republican presidents…

• In 2016, the former president and former first lady Laura Bush reportedly voted for "None of the Above for President," but backed Republicans down the ballot. In 2021, he revealed he voted for Condoleezza Rice, his former secretary of state, the year prior.
