The UK has insisted the Falkland Islands are British after Argentina broke a co-operation deal and pushed for talks on the islands' sovereignty.

In 2016, both sides agreed to disagree on the sovereignty of the Falklands in favour of improved relations.

Argentina pulled out of the pact this week and informed UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.

The Falkland Islands were subject to a bloody war in 1982 when Argentina tried to stake a territorial claim.

In response, Mr Cleverly tweeted: "The Falkland Islands are British. Islanders have the right to decide their own future - they have chosen to remain a self-governing UK Overseas Territory."

Falklands dispute may last decades - Argentina president

Argentina’s president Javier Milei says he accepts the Falkland Islands are currently “in the hands of the UK".

In an interview with the BBC, the right-wing politician vowed to get the islands back through diplomatic channels but said there was “no instant solution”.

His language on the status of the Falklands is different from past leaders who have historically maintained the islands are Argentine.

President Milei admitted it could take decades to try to gain sovereignty of the Falkland Islands from the UK and said Argentina does not "seek conflict".

It comes after he promised a “roadmap” for the islands to become Argentine, on the 42nd anniversary of the Falklands War in early April.

'Argentina Stopped': Unions Hold Second General Strike Over Milei Austerity
by Jessica Corbett
May 10, 2024

Introduction:
(Common Dreams) Argentina's primary trade union federation on Thursday held another nationwide general strike, the second called since President Javier Milei, a far-right economist, took office in December and began pursuing sweeping austerity and deregulation.

The South American nation's unions organized the strike "in defense of democracy, labor rights, and the living wage," according to a statement from the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), the Argentine Workers' Central Union (CTA), and the Autonomous CTA.

"It is a day of resistance and demand," the groups said, blasting the Milei government's "brutal" attacks on labor rights, social security, public health, education, science, and "our cultural identity." The policies of austerity, say opponents, have disproportionately impacted working people and retirees.

The labor groups called out the government for promoting "dangerous policies for the privatization of public enterprises" and pushing for "a phenomenal transfer of resources to the most concentrated and privileged sectors of the economy."

CGT celebrated the 24-hour strike's success on Friday, declaring that "Argentina stopped," and sharing photos of sparsely populated roads, transit hubs, and other public spaces.

Milei Returns to the United States to Participate in a Billionaires' Camp
by Centenera Sea
July 12, 2024

Introduction:
(El País) Javier Milei says he hates traveling because he misses his dogs , but he does it because it is part of his job as president of Argentina . On Thursday night he left the country again to participate in a summit for billionaires in Idaho, which will be his eleventh international trip and the fifth to the United States since he assumed the presidency last December. It is a record number for the first seven months of an Argentine president. “I am going to meet with the biggest businessmen in the world,” Milei replied at the Casa Rosada when asked about his expectations for this new trip abroad .

The delegation accompanying him includes his sister and presidential secretary, Karina Milei; the Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo; and his chief economic adviser, Damián Reidel. They are traveling on a private plane and not on the presidential aircraft because it is stopped for a technical inspection, according to information provided on Friday by presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni.

Adorni detailed the presidential agenda, which will begin this Friday with meetings with businessmen and on Saturday includes a 25-minute speech at the annual Sun Valley conference. He will begin his return trip on Sunday, with a stopover in the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil, to land back in Buenos Aires early on Monday.

This will be Milei's second consecutive weekend outside the country to participate in private events. The previous one was in the Brazilian city of Camboriú, where he was received like a star at the Conservative Action Policy Conference that he shared with other far-right Latin American leaders such as former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and Chilean politician José Antonio Kast.

The Sun Valley conference, known as the “summer camp for billionaires,” has been organized for more than 40 years by the investment bank Allen & Company. Some of the richest and most influential businessmen on the planet, as well as media and political figures, travel to Idaho on their private jets to discuss business and geopolitics. Among those confirmed this year are Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI; Mark Zuckerberg of Meta; Tim Cook of Apple; and Bog Iger of Disney.

Which probably goes far in explaining this headline:

Milei’s Popularity Drops
September 27, 2024

Introduction:
(Buenos Aires Times) Anew study assessing the popularity ratings of South American presidents has confirmed a trend measured by various polling firms in recent days: Javier Milei’s image continues to fall.

The “Rankings of South American Presidents,” conducted by CB Consultora, headed by Cristián Buttié, shows Milei’s rating dipped over four points month-on-month.

The poll sample was gathered from Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Venezuela, Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay following the CB Cawi Research (online interview) method on 12,444 respondents over 18 (between 1,045 and 1,462 people per country), between September 17 and 21.
Further Extract:
Milei, given a 46.4 percent positive image, (is) thus…the chief executive who experienced the greatest fall in his assessment from the month of August (when he had 50.6 percent), or a drop of 4.2 points.

Javier Milei Infuriates G20 by Rejecting Call for Gender Equality
by Patrick Gillespie, Manuela Tobias & Simone Iglesias
October 22, 2024

Introduction:
(Buenos Aires Times) Javier Milei became world famous for the radical economic policies he’s implementing in Argentina, but it’s his lesser known views on gender equality and climate change that are angering Group of 20 leaders who are set to meet in Rio de Janeiro next month.

Under Milei’s guidance, Argentine negotiators earlier this month refused to sign a statement on female empowerment that had the support of all other G20 nations, including those not exactly at the vanguard of women’s rights such as Saudi Arabia. Brazil then issued a chair statement on the theme, noting that all G20 members except Argentina had agreed to the text.

It was never a secret that the libertarian Milei espoused some controversial ideas about feminism, which he sees as unconstitutional for undermining gender equality, and climate change, which he doesn’t consider a man-made phenomenon and much less a priority for developing nations. But this is probably the first time that his rhetoric has practical consequences, and one of them is to incense fellow G20 nations, according to several officials working on the preparation of the summit scheduled for November 18-19.

One of them said the Argentines are playing the role of extremists, potentially forcing the group to conclude the summit with a communiqué signed by only 19 of its members. Another said Milei is against the whole 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development sponsored by the United Nations. All of them requested anonymity to talk about closed-door discussions.

Milei Calls for ‘Alliance of Free Nations’ as He Hosts Meloni
November 20, 2024

Introduction:
(Buenos Aires Times) President Javier Milei called for the creation of “an alliance of free nations against tyranny and misery” on Wednesday as he welcomed Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the Casa Rosada.

Extending an invite to Meloni before the press, Argentina's leader said the grouping would have private property, capitalism and the ideas of freedom as its banner.

Milei, 53, also pushed back against what he described as “the woke virus,” criticising “gender ideology” and noting similarities between his government and the one led by Meloni.

Ours are “like-minded administrations and there is a special relationship between our nations,” said the La Libertad Avanza leader. “We defend free trade, common sense and private property to the letter. We want to recover freedom.”

“In the face of the advances of the woke virus, we call for the values of the Western world and common sense to be highlighted,” he declared.

Argentina President Faces Impeachment Calls Over Crypto Crash
by Tom Gerken
February 17, 2025

Introduction:
(BBC) Argentine President Javier Milei is facing impeachment calls - and legal action accusing him of fraud - over his promotion of cryptocurrency on social media.

Milei posted on X, formerly Twitter, about the $LIBRA coin on Friday, which he said would help fund small businesses and start-ups.

He shared a link to buy it, causing its price to shoot up. But within a few hours, he deleted his post and the cryptocurrency nosedived in value, losing investors most of their money.

Some opposition members of Congress say they plan to start proceedings to impeach Milei. Meanwhile, lawyers filed complaints of fraud in Argentina's criminal court on Sunday.

Some people online have accused Milei of what is known as a "rug pull" - where promoters of a cryptocurrency draw in buyers, only to stop trading activity and make off with the money raised from sales. They pointed out that the link used to buy the coins referenced a phrase the president uses in his speeches.
