World may be 'post-herd immunity' to measles, top US scientist says

A leading immunologist warned of a “post-herd-immunity world”, as measles outbreaks affect communities with low vaccination rates in the American south-west, Mexico and Canada. The US is enduring the largest measles outbreak in a quarter-century. Centered in west Texas, the measles outbreak has killed two unvaccinated children and one adult and spread to neighboring states including New Mexico and Oklahoma.

“We’re living in a post-herd-immunity world. I think the measles outbreak proves that,” said Dr Paul Offit, an expert on infectious disease and immunology and director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “Measles – because it is the most contagious of the vaccine-preventable diseases, the most contagious human disease really – it is the first to come back.”

The US eliminated measles in 2000. Elimination status would be lost if the US had 12 months of sustained transmission of the virus. As of 1 May, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 935 confirmed measles cases across 30 jurisdictions. Nearly one in three children under five years old involved in the outbreak, or 285 young children, have been hospitalized.

Three large outbreaks in Canada, Mexico and the US now account for the overwhelming majority of roughly 2,300 measles cases across the World Health Organization’s six-country Americas region, according to the health authority’s update this week. Risk of measles is considered high in the Americas, and has grown 11-fold compared with 2024.

Trump administration has shut down CDC's infection control committee
https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-n ... rcna205209
The Trump administration has terminated a federal advisory committee that issued guidance about preventing the spread of infections in health care facilities.

The Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) crafted national standards for hand-washing, mask-wearing and isolating sick patients that most U.S. hospitals follow.

Four committee members said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention delivered the news about HICPAC’s termination to members Friday.

A letter reviewed by NBC News — which members said the CDC sent out after a virtual meeting — says the termination took effect more than a month previously, on March 31. According to the letter, the termination aligns with President Donald Trump’s executive order calling for a reduction of the federal workforce.

Health Soaring number of Alberta measles cases worries health officials in both Canada, U.S.

Source: globalnews

By Ken MacGillivray & Drew Stremick Posted May 15, 2025 8:21 pm
Fourteen new confirmed cases of measles over the past 24 hours means the number of cases in Alberta has now climbed to a total of 409.

................

More than three-quarters of the people diagnosed with the virus are children and three people are in hospital, in intensive care.

“I think it’s actually just crazy — it’s appalling,” said Dr Lenore Saxinger, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Alberta.

“For context, when many current doctors were in training, in the early 2000s, shortly after measles was eliminated as something that circulates in Canada, we would see less than 10 cases a year for many years — and now we’re getting essentially close to 10 or more cases a day.”

...............

The outbreak of measles in Canada is now also being blamed for a public health alert in the United States in the Seattle area of Washington state..................

Scientists Warn Yellow Fever Could Spark a Pandemic Worse Than COVID-19

Last updated: 2025/05/19 at 7:44 PM

We’ve come a long way from the days of masks and lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the losses endured by millions of families are still recent.

Even though calm has returned to the streets and homes of the world, a new study published in the journal NPJ Viruses warns of a dangerous increase in yellow fever cases, and that this could be a serious problem.

According to PAHO and WHO, there are increasing cases of yellow fever in different countries due, in theory, to population growth and increased tourism. It is a disease that can be contracted through mosquito bites, and its spread could trigger a global health crisis worse than that of the coronavirus. The scientists leading this research have warned about the risks posed by this infection.

“A yellow fever pandemic in today’s world would cause a devastating public health crisis that, due to its far greater lethality, would make the COVID-19 pandemic pale in comparison,” the study’s authors note, making a truly frightening claim given that COVID-19 has killed more than seven million people to date.

“Unlike other mosquito-borne diseases, humans infected with yellow fever virus exhibit high viremia and efficiently amplify hosts, allowing for mosquito-mediated human-to-human transmission,” they add.
