It's an incredibly unpopular bill that didn't even pass with a true majority. 215-214 with absent votes.
To know is essentially the same as not knowing. The only thing that occurs is the rearrangement of atoms in your brain.

From the cited article:
The road to Thursday’s successful vote was dramatic until up to the last moment. Reps. David Schweikert (R-Ariz.) and Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.) were the lone two lawmakers to miss the vote: Johnson said Schweikert arrived in the chamber a second too late, and Garbarino’s office said the New York Republican “briefly stepped out and inadvertently missed the vote.”

The Speaker specified Garbarino slept through the vote.

“By the way, I just want you to know: For the record, we really had 217 votes this morning,” Johnson told reporters. “Andrew Garbarino did not make it in time — he fell asleep in the back.
caltrek's comment: Another example of why it is so hard to write satire about Trump and the Republicans in Congress. I mean leaving aside the seriousness of the bill's measures, that is hilarious and without the need for any further embellishments to make it so.

Judge Rules Trump’s South Sudan Deportations Violate Court Order
by Isabela Dias and Noah Lanard
May 22, 2025

Introduction:
(Mother Jones) A federal district court judge in Boston ruled on Wednesday that the Trump administration’s attempt to send several immigrants from other countries to South Sudan violated a court order blocking the government from deporting people to third countries without allowing them to object to their removal.

Judge Brian E. Murphy in the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts said at Wednesday’s hearing that there was no doubt that the Department of Homeland Security’s actions were “unquestionably violative” of his April 18 preliminary injunction, which requires the government to provide people with a “meaningful opportunity” to express a fear of being returned to a country that is not their own. Judge Murphy also left open the possibility of a future finding that the violation constituted criminal obstruction.

“It wasn’t possible for these people [to have] a meaningful opportunity to object to their transfer to South Sudan,” Judge Murphy said. He noted the less than 24 hours the men were afforded outside of business hours to consult with an attorney before being put on a plane was “plainly insufficient.” Judge Murphy added later, “I don’t see how anybody could say that these individuals had a meaningful opportunity to object.”

Lawyers for a group of men at risk of being sent to third countries filed an emergency motion on Tuesday after learning that the Trump administration planned to remove detained immigrants to South Sudan, which became independent in 2011 and where a devastating civil war may resume shortly. They asked the court to halt their deportations from the Port Isabel detention center in Texas and return the men to the United States if they had already been removed.

The complaint alleges at least two of the men, a national of Myanmar identified as N.M., and T.T.P., a Vietnamese man, were given a notice of removal on Monday, May 19, in English only, despite the requirement in Judge Murphy’s preliminary injunction that the form be provided in a “language the alien can understand.” They declined to sign the notice, according to court documents.

caltrek's comment: Again, it not just a question of whether these immigrants should be allowed to stay in the country, but also whether they are given their rights to due process. The Trump administration ignoring court orders is extremely dangerous to all of us. The lack of backbone amongst Republican members of Congress does not help. Perhaps they are all just too busy taking naps.
Don't mourn, organize.

It's disturbing that no Senate Republicans have voiced concerns over the gutting of contempt enforcement

Noem urges Poles to elect Trump ally as CPAC holds its first meeting in Poland

https://apnews.com/article/poland-us-cp ... 1e344770bc
CPAC chairman Matt Schlapp opened the proceedings with a speech claiming that conservatives around the world are locked in a battle against “globalists,” whom he described as enemies of faith, family and freedom.

Schlapp claimed CPAC had stood by Trump throughout his legal battles and declared that similar threats were playing out in countries like Poland.

“Are you happy that America is getting closer to being great again?” Schlapp asked the audience. “Did the reelection of Donald Trump bring you joy?”

“When one of us is under attack, the rest of us must come to that person’s defense,” he added. “The globalists intend to take each one of us out one by one — to shame us, to silence us, to bankrupt us, to ruin us, to make our kids turn against us.”
