CBO: Trump's budget would kick 11 million people off healthcare, add $2.4 trillion to deficit

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s big bill making its way through Congress will cut taxes by $3.75 trillion but also increase deficits by $2.4 trillion over the next decade, according to an analysis released Wednesday by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

The CBO also estimates an increase of 10.9 million people without health insurance under the bill by 2034, including 1.4 million who are in the United States without legal status in state-funded programs.

The package would reduce federal outlays, or spending, by nearly $1.3 trillion over that period, the budget office said.

“In the words of Elon Musk, this bill is a ‘disgusting abomination,’” said Rep. Brendan Boyle of Pennsylvania, the top Democrat on the House Budget Committee, reviving the billionaire former Trump aide’s criticism of the package.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said he called Musk late Tuesday to discuss the criticism but had not heard back. “I hope he comes around,” Johnson told reporters.

The analysis comes at a crucial moment in the legislative process as Trump is pushing Congress to have the final product on his desk to sign into law by the Fourth of July. The work of the CBO, which for decades has served as the official scorekeeper of legislation in Congress, will be weighed by lawmakers and others seeking to understand the budgetary impacts of the sprawling 1,000-page-plus package.

Ahead of the CBO’s release, the White House and Republican leaders criticized the budget office in a preemptive campaign designed to sow doubt in its findings.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the CBO has been “historically wrong,” and Senate Majority Leader John Thune said the CBO was “flat wrong” because it underestimated the potential revenue growth from Trump’s first round of tax breaks in 2017. The CBO last year said receipts were $1.5 trillion, or 5.6% greater than predicted, in large part because of the “burst of high inflation” during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Scrambles to Explain Voting for Trump’s Bill She Now Opposes
by Janna Brancolini
June 4, 2025

Introduction:
(The Daily Beast) MAGA loyalist Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene offered an explanation for why she didn’t read parts of Donald Trump’s signature spending bill before giving it the green light.

The Georgia congresswoman said on Tuesday that despite voting in favor of the president’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which narrowly passed the House on May 22, she will now vote against it during the reconciliation process unless a provision on artificial intelligence is removed.

“Full transparency, I did not know about this section on pages 278-279 of the OBBB that strips states of the right to make laws or regulate AI for 10 years,” Greene wrote on X Tuesday. “I am adamantly OPPOSED to this and it is a violation of state rights and I would have voted NO if I had known this was in there.”

Asked Tuesday by NewsNation host Blake Burman how she could have not known what was in the bill, Greene said she had received the 1,038-page bill’s text at the last minute and hadn’t read the section on AI.

“We don’t the full bill text until very close to the time to vote for it,” she said. “That was one section that was two pages that I didn’t see.”

Adams to protesters: ‘We will not allow you to destroy our city’

https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watc ... -our-city/

That's not going to happen, because these protests are small and largely peaceful. Not that he cares though.

American Spring? How Nonviolent Protest in the U.S. is Accelerating
by Erica Chenoweth, Soha Hammam, Jeremy Pressman, and Christopher Wiley Shay
June 12, 2025

Introduction:
(Waging Nonviolence) On streets and highway passes, at intersections and in parks, millions of Americans continue to turn out to protest against the Trump administration and its policies. The media spotlight is currently focused on the ongoing protests against ICE raids in Los Angeles, and the Trump administration’s militarized response to them. In our research at the Crowd Counting Consortium, we do not yet have a full picture of the number and range of protests that have occurred in June. However, we do know that protests against ICE raids have been intensifying around the country for months, alongside protests opposing perceived power-grabs by the Trump administration. And we know that the movement’s tactics have been extraordinarily peaceful.
Additional extract:
Among the 86 percent of anti-Trump events for which we tallied participation on April 5, we report between 919,000 and 1.5 million participants that day. Although our estimate is below the 5 million figure offered up by some accounts, April 5 clearly involved the most participants nationwide that we have seen during the second Trump administration — and the most we have recorded in a single day since the nationwide uprising following the killings of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and Breonna Taylor in 2020.
Conclusion:
Overall, in over 99.5 percent of protests in April and May, we recorded no injuries, arrests or property damage — an unprecedentedly tiny fraction for a movement of this size and geographic dispersion. Contrary to officials’ hyperbolic claims of a disorderly movement attempting to sow chaos, at least through April and May, protesters associated with the anti-Trump movement were extraordinarily nonviolent in their tactics.

Millions Taking Part in Nationwide ‘No Kings’ Protests
by Giselle (Gigi) Ewing
June 14, 2025

Introduction:
(Politico) As President Donald Trump’s military parade rolls through the nation’s capital on Saturday, millions of Americans across the country are taking part in the largest coordinated protests against the president since the start of his second administration.

But while Trump’s parade aims to show America’s military prowess in its new era — remade under the administration’s anti-diversity, equity and inclusion policies — over 2,000 protests planned for major cities and small towns across the country are expected to outdo the president’s parade in scale.
