Introduction:

(CNN) New York City comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander was arrested by federal officers inside a Manhattan immigration court on Tuesday, according to a spokesperson for his office.

Multiple videos on social media show Lander being put in handcuffs after officers surrounded him in a hallway at the court building as he’s standing up against a wall next to another man (see above post).

One of the videos shows Lander appearing to stand in the way of officers who were trying to arrest a man. As he blocks officers, the officers move in and arrest him following a brief scuffle in which Lander appears to be placed in a chokehold and is then pushed up against a wall, the video shows.

“You don’t have a judicial warrant,” Lander says to the officers as he held on to the man’s arm.

Conclusion:

“While escorting a defendant out of immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza, Brad was taken by masked agents and detained by ICE. This is still developing and we are monitoring the situation closely,” said Dora Pekec, Lander’s campaign spokesperson.

A private school in the San Francisco Bay Area really wanted to recruit a baseball star to go to their school and play on their team. But it completely dropped its pursuit when they learned that his parents are gay.

Rising high-school freshman Caleb Degala-Burnett and his dads, Mike Degala and Master Burnett, claim that coaches and administrators at Valley Christian, in Dublin, California, were impressed with the 14-year-old outfielder’s performance at a recent invite-only showcase and with his ranking as a college prospect and potential pro draft pick, according to the San Francisco Standard. The family says Valley Christian courted Caleb this past spring, going so far as to offer financial assistance to help cover the school’s $24,000-per-year tuition.

The Tragedy of Political Violence: It Works

Introduction:

(Counterpunch) The cold truth is this: political violence works. The assassination and attempted assassination of two Minnesota state legislators remind us again that violence is not just a tragedy—it is a tactic. In democratic societies, people are taught to condemn such actions and to see them as aberrations. Yet the historical record tells us something far more uncomfortable: political violence is effective, and that is why it continues.

People cling to the idea that political violence is not only immoral but counterproductive. If it were truly ineffective, rational actors would abandon it. But they have not. Too often, political violence delivers results—through intimidation, disruption, or the outright removal of opposition.

Consider the 20th and 21st centuries: the Armenian Genocide, the Holocaust, the Khmer Rouge’s massacres in Cambodia, Rwanda’s 1994 genocide, the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia, the ongoing repression of Uyghurs in China, and the violent persecution of the Rohingya in Myanmar. Each was a brutal campaign to eliminate a people, and though they did not achieve total eradication, they succeeded in redrawing borders, consolidating power, and annihilating political threats. Some argue that Israeli actions in Gaza amount to genocidal violence. These acts were not random; they were strategic, calculated, and tragically successful.

The September 11 attacks rewired global security and surveillance infrastructure overnight. The 1917 Russian Revolution dismantled a monarchy and birthed a global communist empire. The Spanish Civil War set the stage for fascist dictatorship and served as a rehearsal for World War II. The violence surrounding the 1947 Partition of India and Pakistan created two nations and left behind scars that shape South Asia to this day.

Conclusion:

Make no mistake: this author condemns political violence. It is destructive, anti-democratic, and morally corrosive. Yet pretending it does not work is self-deception. History’s harshest lesson is this—while political violence is almost always wrong, it is also, disturbingly, effective.
