The new normal for U.S. tariffs on foreign goods starts at 15%. Even as President Trump seeks to forge new terms of trade with Japan, the European Union and other global economic partners, he is raising the floor for tariffs to their highest level in decades.
Speaking at an AI summit on Wednesday, Mr. Trump said "we'll have a straight, simple tariff of anywhere between 15% and 50%," conditioning the lower rate on countries opening their economies to the U.S. The White House has said sharply higher tariffs could take effect on dozens of countries as soon as Aug. 1 unless they ink new trade deals.
The Trump administration has a separate negotiating timeline with China, which faces an Aug. 12 deadline for an agreement. As these new rules of international commerce take shape, companies across a range of industries are emphasizing that higher tariffs translate into higher operational costs — and higher prices for consumers.
For example, Nestlé on Thursday said it was considering hiking prices for candy bars and other products as tariffs threaten to eat into the food company's profit margins. The same day, Italian fashion brand Moncler said it has already hiked prices for its apparel to offset additional tariff-related costs. And General Electric said this week that proposed U.S. tariffs, should they take effect, would cost the company around $500 million in 2025, noting that it would move to offset those taxes through "cost controls and pricing actions."

Trump announces 25% tariff on India and unspecified penalties for buying Russian oil
https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/tru ... 06859.htmlWASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he’ll impose a 25% tariff on goods from India, plus an additional import tax because of India’s purchasing of Russian oil.
Trump said on his Truth Social platform that India “is our friend” but its “Tariffs are far too high” on U.S. goods.
The Republican president added that India buys military equipment and oil from Russia, which he said has enabled the war in Ukraine. As a result, he intends to charge an additional “penalty” starting on Friday as part of the launch of his administration’s revised tariffs on multiple countries.
The new tariffs could put India at a disadvantage in the U.S. market relative to Vietnam, Bangladesh and, possibly, China, said Ajay Sahai, director general of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations.
“We are back to square one as Trump hasn’t spelled out what the penalties would be in addition to the tariff," Sahai said. “The demand for Indian goods is bound to be hit.”

Trump hikes tariffs on Canada to 35%, announces rates from 10% to 40% for dozens of countries
https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/trum ... 38109.htmlThe White House took a step forward with President Trump’s plan to remake the trade landscape by releasing new details Thursday evening that included a raft of new tariff rates now formally authorized by executive order, which set levels from 10% to 40% on nearly every global trading partner.
The move represents a giant shakeup in the US's trade order, with outlined rates that range from a 35% tariff on Canada (up from 25% currently) to rates above 30% on nations from South Africa to Switzerland.
But there's a last minute catch, as nearly all these new rates (except for Canada's) will not go into effect for seven days, instead of a midnight Friday deadline Trump had previously said.
"These modifications shall be effective ... on or after 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time 7 days after the date of this order," reads the now signed order.

Washington — President Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday imposing an additional 25% tariff on goods from India because it continues to buy oil from Russia.
The announcement by the president comes just a week after he said he would be slapping a 25% tariff on imports from India, as well as an unspecified "penalty," because of its purchases of Russian military equipment and energy. The additional tariff are set to take effect in 21 days, according to the directive. The latest action brings the total duties imposed on Indian products to 50%.
Mr. Trump criticized India then as having tariffs that are "far too high" and "the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers of any country."
The president has sought to target countries doing business with Russia as part of his efforts to pressure the Kremlin to reach a peace deal with Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Steve Witkoff, Mr. Trump's special envoy, in Moscow on Wednesday, according to the Kremlin.
