China’s Smart Glasses Are Once Again Going All the Way Off
Smart glasses out of China are operating on another level, and a rumored pair from Alibaba is the latest example.

There are officially too many wild pairs of smart glasses coming out of China to keep track of. First, it was Xiaomi with its Ray-Ban-stomping pair of glasses that can record 45 minutes of consecutive video and boast an 8.5-hour battery life. Then, just last week, a company called Wigain announced a breakthrough in making mass-producible smart glasses with optical waveguide lenses. Those, I might add, also feel very Meta-killing. Now, it’s Alibaba’s turn, or it’s about to be if rumors are to be believed.

According to unconfirmed reports from the XR Research Institute, which is also connected to rumors surrounding the third-gen version of Meta’s Ray-Bans, Alibaba could release its first pair of self-made smart glasses very soon, and they could be—similar to the aforementioned glasses—far more advanced than what Meta offers in the U.S.

Alibaba's smart glasses may sound like a Ray-Ban dupe, but there are already plans for so much more.

It’s official: Alibaba is entering the smart glasses game. After rumors that percolated late last week, Alibaba unveiled its official plans to put out frames that look awfully similar to Meta’s Ray-Bans, but with a few key advantages that could help them blow way past U.S. competition.

The smart glasses, called Quark AI, are actually a lot more similar to Meta’s Ray-Bans than I expected. For one, they do not feature a display of any kind and instead focus more on here-and-now features like calling, audio, translation, and using a built-in camera to take pictures. If those all sound like familiar capabilities, it’s because Meta’s Ray-Bans can do all of those things. If you’re reading that with deflation, I wouldn’t blame you, given how advanced China’s smart glasses field has become and the resources that Alibaba has at its disposal. But just because those capabilities are similar doesn’t mean Quark AI can’t push the ball forward.

Google is expected to unveil the Pixel Watch 4 at its upcoming event with the Pixel 10 series. According to the leaked promo material, Google says the Pixel Watch 4 is “precision crafted” and “performance ready.”

The Pixel Watch 4 is to have a new “Actua 360” display, and could reach up to 3,000 nits peak brightness. The device will come in the same two sizes as the Pixel Watch 3, 41mm and 45mm sizes, but this time with a redesigned look that uses a domed, curved glass face. But it looks fairly similar to its predecessor. Battery life is rated at 30 hours for the 41mm model and 40 hours for the 45mm version, both with always-on display. Google will be adding a new Quick Charge Dock, charging 25% faster than previous Pixel Watch versions.

Imagine the brand-new Pixel Watch 4 working (seamlessly?) with your iPhone. It might sound like a dream, but it might not be one. Apple seems to be preparing to allow iPhone users to connect third-party accessories in an upcoming iOS release. According to findings in the recently released iOS 26.1 beta 1, the software includes changes that could make it easier for iPhones to work with smartwatches and other wearables not made by Apple.

One of the most notable additions in the beta is Notification Forwarding. As its name suggests, this option lets users push notifications from their iPhone to another non-Apple device. The code also states that only one accessory can receive forwarded notifications at a time, MacWorld reports.

Apple has paused work on its next Vision Pro model to concentrate on creating smart glasses to rival Meta's. The company had been preparing a cheaper and lighter version of the Vision Pro, internally called N100, for a release in 2027. That plan is delayed as engineers have been reassigned to accelerate progress on glasses, Bloomberg reports.

Sources tell Bloomberg that Apple is working on at least two types of glasses. The first, codenamed N50, will connect to an iPhone and lack its own display. Sources say it could be shown as soon as next year and arrive in 2027. Apple is also developing a version with a built-in display, which had been set for 2028 but is now being fast-tracked.

The glasses are expected to come in different styles and to have speakers, cameras, and voice controls. The company is also exploring health-tracking tools for the device.

Amazon unveils AI smart glasses for its delivery drivers

Amazon announced on Wednesday that it’s developing AI-powered smart glasses for its delivery drivers. The idea behind the glasses is to give delivery drivers a hand-free experience that reduces the need to keep looking between their phone, the package they’re delivering, and their surroundings.

The e-commerce giant says the glasses will allow delivery drivers to scan packages, follow turn-by-turn walking directions, and capture proof of delivery, all without using their phones. The glasses use AI-powered sensing capabilities and computer vision alongside cameras to create a display that includes things like hazards and delivery tasks.

Amazon likely hopes that the new glasses will shave time off of each delivery by providing delivery drivers with detailed directions and information about hazards directly in their line of sight.

China Has Meta’s Ray-Ban Display Smart Glasses Beat in One Key Way
Alibaba's new smart glasses are undercutting Meta's Ray-Ban Display glasses by a significant margin.

The smart glasses wars are in full swing, and Meta looks like it’s slated to have some major competition, not just from the usual suspects like Apple and Samsung, but from major players overseas such as Alibaba. The Chinese e-commerce giant officially announced its Quark AI glasses in July and has now shared pricing that undercuts the Meta Ray-Ban Display by a pretty big margin.

As reported by CNBC, Alibaba’s Quark AI smart glasses are launching at $660, which is notably well below the Meta Ray-Ban Display at $800. Preorders for the Quark AI glasses start on Oct. 24, and the smart glasses are expected to ship in December. Like the Meta Ray-Ban Display, the Quark AI glasses take all of the capabilities and features of non-display smart eyewear like the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2, including cameras, a voice assistant, and computer vision, and augment them with an in-lens screen. In the case of Quark AI, there’s a display in each lens, though this screen is where that price difference starts to make more sense.
