The Bolton Case Is Not Like the Others
By Shane Harris
October 17, 2025

Introduction:
(The Atlantic) Before you add John Bolton’s indictment to the growing pile of specious prosecutions of Donald Trump’s enemies, stop and read the Justice Department’s allegations that the former national security adviser systematically shared classified information with people who weren’t authorized to read it, all in the service of writing a tell-all book. The 18-count criminal indictment, filed yesterday, was compiled by experienced prosecutors, not political lackeys. It is detailed and precise, and relies on Bolton’s own words to implicate him.

You should question whether these charges would be brought if Trump weren’t president. Officials in Joe Biden’s administration passed on the chance to do so. And Bolton has plenty of basis to argue that he is being singled out because he is one of Trump’s most voluble and persistent critics. (He pleaded not guilty in court this morning.) But political animus doesn’t make the government’s charges baseless. This indictment does not belong in the same category as the ones against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. Those cases are so weak that a U.S. attorney resigned rather than present them to a grand jury, and career prosecutors told his replacement that the government would probably lose at trial.

People I spoke with who are knowledgeable about the Bolton case—including what he allegedly did while serving in the White House in Trump’s first term, and internal deliberations over whether to charge him with mishandling classified information—say that indicting the former adviser was not an easy call. But the case, several said, is “righteous.” Reading the charges, I’m inclined to agree that if its facts are accurate, the government has a strong argument. I’ve covered a lot of cases of mishandling classified information and documents. Some people who have faced charges like those Bolton does now are in prison.

caltrek’s comment: Of course, Trump himself was charged with mishandling classified information and documents in the White House documents case. A charge that he beat by being elected president.

Several states say SNAP benefits will pause on Nov. 1 if shutdown continues
More than 40 million Americans are at risk of losing critical food assistance benefits next month because of the government shutdown. States across the country have started warning that payments through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will not be distributed as scheduled on Nov. 1 if Congress fails to reopen the government before the end of the month.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said last week that “there are not enough funds” to provide SNAP benefits to keep the program operating as long as the shutdown continues.

“So you’re talking about millions and millions of vulnerable families, of hungry families that are not going to have access to these programs because of this shutdown,” she told reporters on Thursday.

Anti-science bills hit statehouses, stripping away public health protections built over a century
By MICHELLE R. SMITH and LAURA UNGAR
Updated 9:36 AM CDT, October 21, 2025

More than 420 anti-science bills attacking longstanding public health protections – vaccines, milk safety and fluoride – have been introduced in statehouses across the U.S. this year, part of an organized, politically savvy campaign to enshrine a conspiracy theory-driven agenda into law.

An Associated Press investigation found that the wave of legislation has cropped up in most states, pushed by people with close ties to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The effort would strip away protections that have been built over a century and are integral to American lives and society. Around 30 bills have been enacted or adopted in 12 states.

Trump administration officials are directing activists to push anti-science legislation in the states – where public health authority rests – with the ultimate goal of changing laws and minds nationally.

The effort normalizes ideas fueled by the anti-vaccine movement that Kennedy has helped lead for years. His Make America Healthy Again agenda masks anti-science ideas while promoting goals such as making food more natural or reducing chemicals. Meanwhile, vaccination rates continue to fall, allowing the infectious diseases measles and whooping cough to make comebacks as Kennedy has sought to broadly remake federal policies on public health matters including fluoride and vaccines.

“The march of conspiracy thinking from the margins to the mainstream now guiding public policy should be a wake-up call for all Americans,” said Devin Burghart, president and executive director of the Institute for Research and Education on Human Rights, who has tracked the anti-vaccine movement for decades. “People are literally going to die from it as a result.”

What the ‘No Kings’ Protests Accomplished
By Alexander Karn
October 21, 2025

Introduction:
(The Progressive) On October 18, an estimated seven million people turned out in all fifty states for one of more than 2,700 “No Kings” rallies, in what was likely the second largest single day of protest in the history of the United States (after the first Earth Day in 1970). Despite escalating rhetoric from the White House comparing Democrats to “terrorists” and “criminals,” these large-scale public demonstrations were peaceful, joyous, and largely non-ideological.

Photos from the rallies show a diverse range of participants: old, young, urban, rural, queer, straight, and multi-racial. These were clearly not the “hate America” cabals that House Speaker Mike Johnson warned of in the days leading up to the protests. A sizable contingent of demonstrators waved American flags, and some paraded in patriotic costumes—George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Uncle Sam, and Lady Liberty could all be spotted marching and mingling with their compatriots. In Washington, D.C., protestors unfurled a giant replica of the Constitution, to which they added their own signatures. In New York City, where more than 100,000 demonstrators took to the streets, police reported a grand total of zero protest-related arrests.

Although the rallies were unarguably a success in terms of turnout and visibility, some folks did question their political utility. “Wake me up when ya’ll are ready to do something about ICE,” one person wrote in response to photos posted on social media from a rally in Upstate New York. In The Atlantic, George Packer cited the protests approvingly, but also wondered whether “intermittent” protests could really sustain an effective political movement. We shouldn’t automatically dismiss such doubts and negativity: If some people question the efficacy of the protests or see them as useless virtue signaling, then we need to spell out exactly what they represent and what they can realistically achieve.

Civil resistance aims to change the status quo, but that’s not the only measuring stick. Protests of this sort are not only about the impacts they have on the external world; they are also important for effecting internal change. People who participate in these protests learn to straighten their spines and lift their voices. They learn about the possibilities for broad solidarity, and they learn the value and the discipline of nonviolence.

On No Kings Day, a New America Came to Life
By Robert Koehler
October 22, 2025

Introduction:
(Common Dreams) Shouts and honking horns... and a country being born?

Hey, hey, ho, ho... I don’t know. it’s been four days ago, as I write, that the second No Kings rally was held across the country—across the world. I can still hear the blaring horns; they sounded like music. Something fused and bubbled in the blare, a sense of connection and shared values, that isn’t going away. That was the uniqueness of this rally, or so I hope and feel at some deep place in my heart.

I attended the rally, with my sister and two friends, in Appleton, Wisconsin, where I now live—one of about 2,700 such rallies across the country. The several thousand people packing the streets of downtown Appleton were part of the 7 million people throughout the country who felt called upon to—shall we say?—join the future. This is my takeaway. This is why I’m writing about the rally today. Yeah, it’s over. But it’s not “done.”

No faux king way!

Excuse me as I quote one of the signs at the rally—one of thousands of angry and heartfelt cries put into words at the event. No Kings—a continuation of the rally held in June—was, as far as I’m concerned, an act of creative participation. We’re still in the process of creating our country.

It's supposed to be payday for many federal workers. Instead, they're getting nothing

Wanda Bright holds a cardboard box of food as volunteers provide food to others standing in line.

Wanda Bright, a federal worker affected by the shutdown, picks up food from the Capital Area Food Bank in Hyattsville, Md., on Tuesday.

The sight was staggering in Prince George's County, Md., home to more than 60,000 federal workers: middle-class professionals lined up for boxes of pasta, protein and produce to feed their families.

After a two-hour wait, Wanda Bright had finally reached the front of the line — just as the first batch of supplies ran out.

The Capital Area Food Bank had started the day with 300 boxes, enough for 150 government employees to receive two boxes each. It turned out that the need was even greater.

Fortunately, reinforcements had been called in, and cheers erupted as a second truck backed into the shopping center parking lot. Bright sighed with relief as volunteers handed over bread and other provisions to help get her family through the week............................

Americans brace for food stamps to run out: ‘The greatest hunger catastrophe since the Great Depression’
Nearly 42 million people in danger as federal government shutdown continues and Snap funding to end 1 November
Eric Berger

While Republicans have sought to blame Democrats for the potential loss in benefits that people who make little money rely on, those who work in the food-insecurity space say that is misleading because Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act already eliminated almost $187bn in funding for Snap through 2024, according to a congressional budget office estimate.

Should funding run out at the end of the month, “we will have the greatest hunger catastrophe in America since the Great Depression, and I don’t say that as hyperbole”, said Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America.

The Department of Agriculture recently sent a letter to regional Snap directors warning them that funding for Snap will run out at the end of the month and directing them to hold payments “until further notice”.

More than 200 Democratic representatives have urged the USDA to use contingency funds to continue paying for Snap benefits.

“There are clear steps the administration can and must take immediately to ensure that millions of families across the country can put food on their table in November,” a letter from the lawmakers to the USDA states. “SNAP benefits reach those in need this November would be a gross dereliction of your responsibilities to the American people. We appreciate your consideration of these requests.”

Trump signals he'll fund SNAP after federal judges ruled the administration must keep sending out benefits

Source: Business Insider

Oct 31, 2025, 7:35 PM ET

Federal judges in Massachusetts and Rhode Island ruled Friday afternoon that President Donald Trump must fund food stamps during the government shutdown.

In a Friday night Truth Social post, Trump signaled he would comply with the judges' orders. "Our Government lawyers do not think we have the legal authority to pay SNAP with certain monies we have available, and now two Courts have issued conflicting opinions on what we can and cannot do," the president said on Truth Social. He added, "Therefore, I have instructed our lawyers to ask the Court to clarify how we can legally fund SNAP as soon as possible."

The cases, filed on behalf of states, municipalities, and nonprofit organizations this week, called for the Trump administration to use contingency funds to pay for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program during the government shutdown.

The rulings reverse the USDA's plans to pause benefits starting November 1 after their typical funding sources ran out. Patrick A. Penn, deputy undersecretary for US Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services, said in a letter to state leaders on October 24 that the Agriculture Department is "suspending all November 2025 benefit allotments until such time as sufficient federal funding is provided, or until FNS directs State agencies otherwise."

Trump administration will provide partial November food stamp benefits
The Trump administration said today that it will provide partial food stamp benefits for November by tapping into the program’s contingency fund amid the ongoing government shutdown.

A US Department of Agriculture official said in a sworn statement that the agency will use $4.65 billion from the contingency fund to pay the November benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which he said will “be obligated to cover 50% of eligible households’ current allotments.”

Recipients will not see the payments immediately.
