Ministry Warns About AI-Generated Fake News on Flooding in Central Region
November 23, 2025

Introduction:
(Vietnam+) Hanoi (VNA) - The Ministry of Public Security on November 23 issued a warning about the spread of false information, particularly AI-generated fake news, related to the flooding in the central region.

According to the ministry, alongside positive information and messages of support for people in flood-affected areas, in recent days, some individuals, instead of showing empathy, have taken advantage of the situation to disseminate false information on a continuous basis.

The purpose of these individuals is to distort facts, criticise the authorities and military and security forces in their flood response and recovery efforts. Others exploit the situation by fabricating reports of thousands of deaths or tens of thousands of people not yet rescued in order to attract views and solicit donations for personal gain. These fake news disrupt information flow, complicate the situation, and cause confusion among the public, especially residents in flood-affected areas.

This information spreads very quickly, far beyond the reach of official sources, directly affecting public perception and creating difficulties for the direction and coordination efforts of the forces on the ground, the ministry emphasised.

The Ministry of Public Security advised all Internet users to remain vigilant when viewing and sharing information. It is necessary to strongly condemn acts of spreading false information and exploiting AI to fabricate content that causes public confusion and obstructs the ongoing rescue efforts of the authorities, it stressed, encouraging people to actively share accurate information to help support residents in flood-affected areas through this difficult period.

caltrek’s comment: This again raises the issue of who do you trust. Vietnam+ is very much a regime-oriented media source and is quick to come to the defense of the current government in Vietnam. Is it motivated enough to accuse those who spread legitimate news stories of indulging in fabrication, or are its cautionary comments made for good reason?

Northeast prepares for first major snowstorm of season

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The Northeast was getting ready Tuesday for its first major snowstorm of the season, just as the Midwest began to escape snow and ice that snarled travel after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Some parts of northern New England were expecting up to 10 inches (25.4 centimeters) of snow. A windy, potentially icy storm was headed to the region and could soak some parts of the area’s six states while piling snow in others, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories in states including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Connecticut and New York ahead of the snow’s arrival.

The winter blast is set to arrive days after more than 8 inches (20.32 centimeters) of snow fell at Chicago O’Hare International Airport over the weekend, setting a record for the highest single calendar day snowfall in November at the airport, according to the weather service. The previous record was set in 1951.

Climate Change Primed Washington State for Historic Flooding
By Zoya Teirstein
December 16, 2025

Introduction:
(Grist) A long, warm plume of airborne water snaked its way from the subtropical Pacific Ocean toward the U.S. West Coast at the beginning of this month. As the so-called atmospheric river made its way north, it sucked up moisture from above-average sea surface temperatures.

When the airborne river washed ashore on December 8, it unleashed a torrential gush of water on the Pacific Northwest that didn’t let up for the better part of a week. Now, a second atmospheric river is battering Washington state, with a third likely later this week.

On Wednesday, Washington Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency and public officials issued “go now” evacuation alerts to 100,000 people. Thousands in western Canada also received orders to evacuate. Up to 18 inches of rain fell on parts of western Washington state last week, and rivers across the region burst their banks. At least 30 major roads were impassable or closed due to damage, and emergency crews conducted 250 water rescues.

“The flooding levels we’re looking at are potentially historic in nature,” Ferguson said at a press conference on Thursday.

They are not, however, entirely unexpected. A study published earlier this year found that atmospheric rivers have become slightly wetter, larger, and more frequent since 1980. Those changes are consistent with the basic physics of climate change: A warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture. Meteorologists say that these dynamics are boosting rainfall events from small squalls to major atmospheric rivers, contributing to a spike in sudden, extreme floods in many parts of the country this year

'Dangerous Scenario Unfolding' in Southern California from Potent Storm Lashing the Entire State
By Mary Gilbert, Chris Dolce, and Andrew Freedman
December 25, 2025

Introduction:
(CNN) A powerful storm carrying a strong atmospheric river laid siege to California Wednesday, with evacuations issued because of the risk of life-threatening flooding and debris flows.

The National Weather Service is warning of more flooding rains and strong winds in Northern and Southern California on Christmas Day. Flash Flood Warnings were issued for parts of Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Mateo counties early Thursday, with “rain rates up to 0.60 inches in 30 minutes” observed in Ventura County.

A day earlier the Weather Prediction Center warned “a dangerous scenario is unfolding” in areas near and north of Los Angeles as downpours threatening “widespread and significant impacts” arrived Wednesday morning.

Some areas in the mountains to the north and northwest of Los Angeles have already seen 4 to 8 inches of rain and the atmospheric river continues to soak the region. Feet of mountain snow, severe thunderstorms and strong winds round out the multiple threats the state is facing.
Additional Extract:
Thousands without power amid high winds: Strong winds and heavy rain blasted Northern California Wednesday, including the Bay Area, where a wind gust up to 108 mph was clocked in the northern hills. Wind gusts have topped 90 mph in multiple spots across Southern California’s San Gabriel Mountains. Thousands of homes and businesses have lost power in the state, according to PowerOutage.us.

caltrek’s comment: It has so far been remarkably quiet here on the Central Coast, except perhaps at night. I have been waking up in the morning to find signs of the neighborhood being drenched in rain overnight as well as effects of high winds. I slept right through it. 😊
