Actor Terence Stamp, who starred as Superman villain, dies aged 87

Terence Stamp, the English actor who played the arch-villain General Zod in Superman films, has died at the age of 87.
In a career that spanned six decades, the Oscar-nominated actor starred in films including The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Far From the Madding Crowd and Valkyrie.
Stamp died on Sunday morning, his family said in a statement to Reuters news agency.
"He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and a writer that will continue to touch people for years to come," they said.

The Oscar winner and Sundance Film Festival founder, star of movies such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Way We Were and All the President's Men, died early Tuesday. Redford's long-time publicist Cindi Berger told The Hollywood Reporter he died at his home in the mountains of Utah, "the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved." Redford leaves behind his wife of 16 years, Sibylle Szaggars, and is survived by two daughters, Shauna and Amy.
As the news broke Tuesday morning, an outpouring of admiration for Redford - a skillful actor who later honed his talent in directing - swept social media.
Star of the Oscar-winning Coda, Marlee Matlin said her film "came to the attention of everyone because of Sundance." She continued on X: "And Sundance happened because of Robert Redford. A genius has passed. RIP Robert."
Stephen King described Redford as "part of a new and exciting Hollywood in the '70s and '80s," adding: "Hard to believe he was 89."

Jane Goodall, known for her ground-breaking studies of chimpanzees, has died aged 91.
A post on her institute's Facebook page said she died on Wednesday morning from natural causes while in California as part of a speaking tour.
"Dr. Goodall's discoveries as an ethologist revolutionized science, and she was a tireless advocate for the protection and restoration of our natural world," said the post.
Goodall was widely considered the world's foremost expert on chimpanzees.
She began her groundbreaking research at 26, observing the primates in east Africa and revealing their capability to engage in complex social behaviours.

Fawlty Towers star Prunella Scales dies aged 93

Fawlty Towers actress Prunella Scales has died aged 93, her family have confirmed.
Scales was best known for playing hotel manager Sybil Fawlty, the bossy wife of Basil, in the classic British sitcom.
The actress died "peacefully at home in London yesterday", her sons Samuel and Joseph said.
They added that she was watching Fawlty Towers the day before she died. She had been diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2013.
"Our darling mother Prunella Scales died peacefully at home in London yesterday. She was 93," her sons told the PA News agency.

His co-discovery of the structure of DNA opened the door to help explain how DNA replicates and carries genetic information, setting the stage for rapid advances in molecular biology.
But his honorary titles were stripped in 2019 after he repeated comments about race and intelligence. In a TV programme, he made a reference to a view that genes cause a difference on average between blacks and whites on IQ tests.
The death of Watson, who co-discovered the double-helix structure of DNA in 1953, was confirmed to the BBC by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, where he worked and researched for decades.
Watson shared the Nobel in 1962 with Maurice Wilkins and Francis Crick for the DNA's double helix structure discovery.

“Sarah Beckstrom of West Virginia, one of the guardsmen that we’re talking about, highly respected, young, magnificent person, started service in June of 2023 outstanding in every way. She’s just passed away,” Trump said in a Thanksgiving call to service members.
The death of Beckstrom, 20, comes after she and US Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, were injured in an “ambush style” shooting just blocks away from the White House on Thanksgiving Eve.
The two members were called to the nation’s capital in August as National Guard troops from multiple states responded to Trump’s surge of federal law enforcement in the area.
Federal and local authorities, their West Virginia neighbors and their loved ones called for prayers.

TMZ has confirmed that Hollywood icon Rob Reiner and his wife of 36 years Michele Singer Reiner were found dead Sunday.
Reiner was 78, and his wife was 68.

Authorities have intensified their search for clues after a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was fatally shot at his home near Boston.
Nuno F Gomes Loureiro, 47, a nuclear science and engineering professor from Portugal, was shot "multiple times" on Monday and died on Tuesday morning in hospital, Brookline police and MIT officials said.
No one is in custody and police are treating the incident as "an active and ongoing homicide investigation", the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office said.
Loureiro joined MIT's faculty in 2016 and was named director of MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center in 2024.
Officers responded to a call for gunshots at an apartment at about 20:30 local time (01:30 GMT). Loureiro was taken by ambulance to a Boston hospital, where he died on Tuesday morning, police said.
