Full-suspension fat-tire e-trike makes light work of heavy hauling
By Paul Ridden

California's intriguingly named Puckipuppy has unleashed a heavy hauling electric trike called the Rottweiler that boasts a 960-watt peak motor, torque sensor, 55-mile battery and full suspension.

The company says that the Rottweiler was designed to solve e-trike problems such as "weak power under load, bumpy rides, unstable turns, tricky reversing..."Image
Its 750-W motor peaks at 960 watts to deliver "plenty of power for hills and heavy loads" though the top pedal-assist speed is limited to 15 mph (25 km/h). This is pretty common for e-trikes, though we have seen models that crank up to 20 mph when unlocked.

Rivian spinoff Also reveals a high-end modular e-bike for $4,500

Several years ago, as a skunkworks team of engineers inside Rivian set out to develop an electric micromobility vehicle, one question loomed. “What do we build in-house?” Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe said in an interview recounting the early days of Also, which spun out of Rivian earlier this year.

“We realized the only way to do this well is to build everything,” said Scaringe, who sits on Also’s board.

The result, which was revealed Wednesday at an event in Oakland, is a pedal-assist electric bike called the TM-B that is more than just a bike, according to Scaringe and Also President Chris Yu. “This is a whole platform of products we’re going to build in the microspace,” Scaringe said. And Scaringe wasn’t kidding. During the Wednesday event, Also revealed two quad-vehicles as well, one of which will be supplied to Amazon.

Watch: Mad scientist swaps bicycle suspension springs for magnets
By Abhimanyu Ghoshal

Colin Furze used to be a plumber, but really found his calling building wacky contraptions, like a homemade hoverbike, a bicycle with wheels made of ice, and automatic Wolverine claws. He even set the world record for the fastest pram (stroller) by fitting an engine on it.

His latest stunt is a hoot for fans of two-wheelers: he created a suspension system for a bicycle that, instead of springs or suspension forks, uses opposing magnets fitted to a custom frame that keep him from feeling any bumps on the road. Surprisingly, it worked.

The idea is indeed novel, and it makes for one of the most interesting bikes I've ever laid eyes on: the huge magnets in front of and behind the seat make it look like someone Photoshopped parts of the frame out.

Rad Power Bikes reaches deal to sell itself for $13.2M

Electric bike company Rad Power Bikes has reached a deal to sell itself to a company called Life Electric Vehicles Holdings (or Life EV) for around $13.2 million, a little more than a month after entering the bankruptcy process.

Florida-based Life EV bills itself as a “developer, manufacturer, and distributor in the light electric vehicle industry.” It offers a number of electric bikes for sale on its website, although most of them were labeled as “sold out” at the time this article was published.

A filing to the bankruptcy docket over the weekend shows that five entities participated in an auction on the Rad Power assets on January 22. The first bid came in at $8 million, and parties traded bids until Life Electric Vehicles came away as the winner. When accounting for Rad Power’s liabilities, the total value of the bid is $14.9 million.

Another e-bike company called Retrospec had the second-highest bid of $13 million and is being labeled as the “backup bidder” in case the deal with Life EV falls through. The bids were a steep discount to Rad Power’s peak $1.65 billion valuation, which was reached in October 2021, per PitchBook. The company has raised a total of $329.2 million, according to PitchBook data.

The acquisition still needs to be approved by the bankruptcy judge.

Cycling system aims for easier wheel-swaps by moving the cassette to the frame

Removing and reinstalling a bike's rear wheel is a hassle at the best of times, but particularly when you're in a hurry. The Dual system is designed to change that, as it moves the cassette from the wheel onto the frame.

On a traditional road or gravel bike with a rear thru axle – which is what the Dual system is made for – removal of the rear wheel involves shifting the chain to the smallest cog on the cassette, yanking out the axle, pulling the derailleur back out of the way, then pounding down on the wheel until it falls out. Putting the wheel back in involves doing all of that stuff in reverse, including manually placing the chain back onto the smallest cog.

What would make things a lot easier would be if the cassette and freehub stayed on the bike when the wheel came off, allowing the chain to stay wherever you left it, and letting the wheel simply drop straight down from between the chain stays. Well, that's where the Dual system comes in.
