The Spectre of Socialism Haunting America
July 24, 2026

Introduction:
(Socialist Worker) Trump and the US ruling class are in turmoil as hatred of capitalism and inequality grows from year to year. Rebecca Givan talks to US socialists about their spectacular growth—and what strategies are needed to win.

A spectre is haunting the US—the spectre of socialism. Polling has shown that 39 ¬percent of Americans have a ¬positive opinion of socialism, among young people that figure rises to more than half.

In July, socialist candidates won electoral victories across the US.

This success has prompted important debates among socialists about the ¬relationship between elections and mass movements and what they can win.

Aminah is the co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) branch in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Aminah told Socialist Worker, “People are agitated, they are mad at the injustices of the capitalist system and structure.

Is It Socialism or Just Common Sense?
By Chuck Collins
August 26, 2026

Introduction:
(Other Words) The debate over capitalism vs. socialism often looks like a battle of cartoon caricatures: Monopoly Man versus the Marx Monster.

Across the planet there are countless flavors of capitalism and socialism, unique mashups of free markets and government policies. Into this muddle wade the right-wing ideologues who fear the red “socialist” demon hiding in every corner.

If Fox News existed in the 1950s, they would’ve labeled Republican President Dwight Eisenhower a socialist for taxing the wealthy and making broad public investments to expand homeownership, enable debt-free higher education, and build infrastructure and technology that expanded the modern middle class.

Yet, what do these labelers call modern-day China, a country that mints hundreds of billionaires a year and dominates global markets with private production? Are they socialist or capitalist?

Meanwhile, social democracies, like Canada and the northern European countries, have progressive tax systems and strong social safety nets. Sweden, with its generous welfare state, has higher rates of entrepreneurship than the United States.

Should probably stress there's a difference between this and democratic socialism
Aurore isn't a demsoc, she's a Marxist

The common argument against socialist policies is "if you tax the rich too much, they'll take their money and leave, and you'll have no tax base." If redistribution of private gains is the point, then that's a fatal problem, and I doubt Mamdani would have won on a platform of outright redistribution of ownership.

At the same time, to an extent capital flight won't actually happen (it's just as common under hypercapitalist systems than outright demsoc or social democracy ones) but if it does, the genuine socialists are the ones celebrating that outcome because you've basically just achieved a bloodless revolution, since the actual goal is seizing ownership of the tools, machines, and productive technology that allowed the rich to become rich in the first place

Demsocs, from my experience, straddle the line there
Socdems straight up aren't that at all and haven't been since 1959
There's still a specter of socialism we've yet to cross into because most Americans just want higher taxes on the wealthy and universal Healthcare and debt relief

The real nasty moment comes when the rhetoric shifts to "we don't care about raising taxes anymore, just take them out"
And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future
