Same thing happened in my flat a few years back!

The electrician had never seen anything like it before.

I ended up having to use beer traps in my garden because so many of the blighters kept getting inside.

Slugs to blame for mystery of faulty traffic lights

The mystery of why malfunctioning traffic lights have been causing chaos for motorists for weeks has been revealed - and it turns out slugs are to blame.

Despite being fixed or replaced, the lights at the Robin Hood crossroads in Stretford, Trafford, have repeatedly failed, with three dangerous incidents reported in the space of a year.

Engineers were initially baffled, but Transport for Greater Manchester has now found the issues were caused by slugs "entering the signal controller, causing short circuits", the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

"This was the first time the highways team had ever experienced this," said Councillor Steve Adshead.

It is thought the slugs were crawling inside the traffic lights for warmth, before being killed by the electrical systems which power the lights.

Pumpkin named Bagheera breaks world record

A pumpkin grower has set a new world record after producing a giant squash.

Ian Paton, from Lymington, Hampshire, entered his exceptionally large specimen into a giant vegetable weigh-off near Reading in Berkshire.

It weighed 2,856.8lbs (1,295.8kg), has circumference of over 20ft (6m) and was officially confirmed by Guinness World Records judge, Sebastian Suski.

Paton said growing the pumpkin named Bagheera, tending to it for up to six hours and providing about 130 gallons of water daily, had been "bloody hard work". It was the first time the 65-year-old, who has grown giant pumpkins with his twin brother Stuart for over 50 years, had entered the competition on his own.

The pumpkin is now on show at Sunnyfields farm near Southampton, where it will be displayed for the next few weeks.
