The Bureau of Meteorology reports that winter 2023 is on track to be the warmest in Australia since national analyses began in 1910 – the mean temperature for the season tracking at 1.54 degrees above average.
Australia’s hottest winter was previously in 1996, when the winter mean temperature was 1.46 degrees above the season average, the bureau said.
Climate experts were forecasting below-average rainfall and unusually warm temperatures ahead for spring throughout much of the country, especially for Western Australia and parts of the south-east, including Victoria.
