Australia on track for hottest winter in more than 100 years
Australia is expected to have experienced its warmest winter on record ahead of what experts are forecasting will be a hot and dry spring, bringing increased bushfire risk to many parts of the country.

The Bureau of Meteorology reports that winter 2023 is on track to be the warmest in Australia since national analyses began in 1910 – the mean temperature for the season tracking at 1.54 degrees above average.

Australia’s hottest winter was previously in 1996, when the winter mean temperature was 1.46 degrees above the season average, the bureau said.

Climate experts were forecasting below-average rainfall and unusually warm temperatures ahead for spring throughout much of the country, especially for Western Australia and parts of the south-east, including Victoria.

September heatwave sets new record

A UK record has been broken for the number of consecutive September days reaching 30C (86F).

A 30.2C reading in Northolt, west London on Thursday afternoon means the mercury has reached at least 30C in the UK for four days in a row.

The previous September record was three days - in 1898, 1906, 1911 and 2016.

The hot weather is expected to continue into the weekend before temperatures cool next week.

Several locations have reported temperatures in excess of 30C. The current highest hourly temperature of 31.3C was recorded at Charlwood, near Gatwick Airport, at 15:00 BST.

Phoenix sets new record in hellishly hot summer - but relief is in sight
Source: The Guardian

Residents in Phoenix, Arizona, are set to experience some relief from the blistering heatwave following the city’s new record of the most days at or above 110F (43.3C) this year despite reaching 112F (44.4C) on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

On Sunday, the NWS announced that temperatures in Arizona’s largest city will finally begin to retreat “closer to the seasonal normal” with highs expected to range between 102F (38.9C) and 104F (40C) between Monday and Friday. Sunday’s temperature broke the daily high record of 111F (43.9C) set in 1990.

The NWS also said that there is a 25% chance of a passing shower or storm on Tuesday, focused mainly over higher terrain. “Only around a month to go until the average last 100-degree day,” it added.

On Saturday, Phoenix’s Sky Harbor international airport reached 110F, making it the 54th day this year to hit that temperature. Saturday’s temperature breaks the previous record of 53 days, which was set in 2020. From 1991 to 2020, the average number of days at 110F or above was 21, the NWS said.
