AI makes phone calls on your behalf

Google has revealed a new virtual assistant, known as Duplex, which can impersonate a human and conduct seamless conversations by phone.

This technology was demonstrated by the company's CEO, Sundar Pichai, on stage at the Shoreline Amphitheater, San Francisco, during the company's annual developer conference, I/O. It can be used for such tasks as scheduling appointments, making reservations in restaurants or getting holiday hours. The assistant is so realistic that it even includes hesitations and affirmations, such as "er" and "mm-hmm". It is yet another milestone in the race to develop strong and truly human-like AI, which some experts believe could emerge as early as 2029.
