The world's first restaurant experience that provides clientele the opportunity to eat meat grown directly from chicken cells has been opened in the Israeli town of Ness Ziona.

Tel Aviv-based food tech company, SuperMeat, claims it has achieved a major milestone for the cultured meat industry, by addressing all three of the key challenges for commercialisation: a scalable manufacturing process; a clear path to cost parity with conventional meat; and the production of high-quality and nutritious chicken products that taste as good as the real thing.

Although the restaurant – The Chicken – is still at the testing and development stage, it can be visited by selected guests. Diners are able to observe the manufacturing plant from their seats and enjoy a restaurant experience on-premise, eating burgers made from chicken produced under the same roof.

SuperMeat is aiming to produce the highest quality chicken meat, grown directly from cells, in a sustainable and animal-friendly process. With the world's demand for meat projected to double by 2050, cultured meat offers an innovative alternative that will provide nutritional security, drastically reduce carbon emissions, and increase food safety worldwide.

SuperMeat claims its technology can enable "high control of end product quality in terms of taste, nutritional value and functional behaviour, allowing for customisation according to target application requirements."

The manufacturing process is performed in a closed system, with no antibiotics and in a completely contaminant-free environment. It eliminates slaughter and uses significantly less water, resources, and energy, with potential for saving vast acres of land if scaled up vertically.

"The launch of The Chicken is an important step toward a world where cultured meat is accessible to everyone," said Ido Savir, CEO, SuperMeat. "There is strong public demand for transparency of how food comes to the table. We're proud to share the full story of SuperMeat chicken for the first time – offering production and dinner all under the same roof, from our plant to your fork."

Having developed a manufacturing process for cultured chicken meat, SuperMeat is now looking for partners in the food and ingredient sourcing industries around the world to collaborate on making cultured meat available everywhere.
