Intel and IDT to develop wireless charging technology

30th August 2012

Integrated Device Technology (IDT) - a semiconductor firm headquartered in California - has announced a partnership with Intel to provide a transmitter and receiver chipset for Intel's new Wireless Charging Technology. This will support resonance charging in a variety of gadgets including Ultrabooks, all-in-one (AiO) PCs, smartphones and cameras.

In other words, a mobile device or peripheral could be charged just by placing it close to another device, without the need for inductive charging or a separate charging mat.

IDT hopes to make a full, two-way resonance chipset available to hardware makers in the first half of 2013. It is unknown when consumers will be able to get their hands on this new technology, but Intel will announce specific plans and timelines at a later date.
