Breathtaking image of storm clouds on Saturn

2nd December 2012

This close-range image of a storm vortex on Saturn was taken by the Cassini spacecraft earlier this week. The mission was launched in 1997, has been exploring the gas giant since 2004 and will end in 2017 with a controlled fall into Saturn's upper atmosphere. Wind speeds on Saturn can reach 1,100 mph (1,800 km/h), with temperatures as low as -173°C (-280°F). Click here for more info, including a larger version.
